Hi! I’m from Connecticut but lived in the UK for a decade. Happy to answer any questions. Honestly, if you want to see non tourist American, Connecticut would be great. But you really need a car. If you want nightlife and to avoid Boston or New York then New Haven is your best bet.

Peter Karamanos wanted the government to build him a stadium where he’d make all the money from concessions, as opposed to the civic center where he just got ticket revenue. I loved the whalers and was devastated when they left but using public money to make a rich man richer is not ideal. So frankly Hartford didn’t fuck it up.

Reply to Yale by thug_nificent

The argument over whether Yale’s not paying taxes outweighs the way it helps keep downtown New Haven vibrant ignores a huge issue in Connecticut: home rule cities. This debate wouldn’t be an issue if New Haven’s tax base included all the surrounding towns that benefit from New Haven without contributing, just like in Hartford. Right now, Yale is simultaneously a drain on the tax base and a source of employment, the arts, and spur to entertainment and nightlife that is great for the city. If city tax bases included suburbs that already benefit from our cities the whole debate goes away.

154 south in Haddam along the Connecticut River past the Godspeed opera house is beautiful. Will take you through Chester and Essex, which are cool places with good food. You can then cross the River and check out the Florence Griswold museum and hit up Book Barn. Keep driving east and you get to Mystic, Noank, and Stonington.
