It could theoretically be done, but we have evolutionary evolved using sleep as we know it as a recovery strategy. It has shown to be an advantage.
Birds for example also have sleep, but they evolved in a way that only one half of the brain sleeps at any time because that allows them to keep flying while recovering which turned out to be an advantage.

The resources are needed for the actual activities.
Like you cannot defragment your harddrive while playing a game, or more general you cannot update the firmware of a device while using it.

The body needs time to focus on certain maintenance tasks for which there was no time during the day. Muscles recover, food is digested, the brain is dreaming to help process new information etc.
This is because it was important for our ancestors to completely focus on activities such as hunting while awake and use sleep to recover at night while it is too dark to do much anyway.

Most movies play in a reality where falling into broken glass doesn't easily cause severe injuries.

According to Edmund Morris in The Rise of Theodore Roosevelt, the President invited “all citizens who are sober, washed, and free of bodily advertising,” to come and meet him.
What does bodily advertising mean?

Many people know facts like "peanuts are legumes", "alcohol is a drug" or "chicken nuggets are made of animal flesh". However, some merely recognize these as facts that are true by definition, but seem to not be fully committed to their truth or grasp the consequences. Its like they didn't adopt the fact fully into their actual belief systems. They tend to keep acting like these facts are not true even though they consider them to be true.
I think this may be related to cognitive dissonance.
Are there philosophical terms to describe this phenomenon or is this merely a matter of psychology?

Reply to ELI5: Why do companies require annual budget be spent 100%? by angrybird7677
Otherwise they risk getting a smaller budget next year. People will argue that they didn't need the whole budget anyway.
