Was coming here to make sure someone mentions Brown's work. She's been researching vulnerability and shame for over 20 years and while sometimes I have to take breaks from her stuff because it can get too intense, she has helped me so much with finding my empathy and opening up to people. I'm reading Atlas of the Heart right now.

It sounds awful but it will be the buyer’s headache. I live in WA and we were under contract for a house that had an attic conversion. During the inspection part of the process we requested records of the permits for the work done but found out it was unpermitted. Went to the county to find out how to rectify and we would have been on the hook not only to get it retro permitted but also to pay 18 years in back taxes with interest since the addition impacted taxes and value. Obviously we walked on the deal.

Basically if no one says anything during the buying process then nothing happens. Just depends on if your buyers care or not.

I work for the state and live in Clark County making almost $70,000 a year and if it weren't for my spouse also earning nearly that amount we would absolutely not be able to afford to live here. In fact we would like to purchase a new home in the next year so will be moving out of state to do so. The going rent in the area for the size of home we currently own is around $2400/month. If I had to show I earn 3 times that amount monthly to get approved for move in, I would not be able to.

Definitely look on NeoGov for state government positions (not all require degrees or specific experience), the vast majority of these and most administrative level positions are based in Thurston county. I work for the state and pass up many opportunities at promotion due to not being able to move up there. Some positions are remote (very few) but most are at least hybrid now (I only go into my field office once a week). Agencies like DSHS and ESD are almost always hiring entry level positions. Starting pay may not be fabulous but the benefits are decent and with the way the pay steps go, I doubled my annual salary in 6 years.

If there's an active NextDoor community in the area seriously post on there, here in Clark County I've seen my neighbors rally to help each other especially with pet supplies. I keep extra cat food, toys, and supplies like beds and litter boxes in my garage since the onset of the pandemic to help my neighbors when they post and I know I am not the only one.
