Reply to Does Hollywood do "test balloon" movies to see how we react to actors before giving them a larger role? by rdtthoughtpolice
Hollywood isn't a singular entity. This isn't how it works at all. Actors audition for roles, sometimes they get chosen, and their profile has an impact on how likely the filmmakers discover them, that's it.

In my mind, PTA makes performance pieces. He likes to create characters and put them in all kinds of situations to see how they'd react. A consistent theme is people who are lonely and have some sort of unhealthy attachment to something other than another person. He makes love stories but the other person is replaced with something more philosophical. I like seeing the people being put through the ringer, being put in horrible situations and seeing how they have to adapt to get out of it.

Spring Breakers intentionally mismarketed the movie and I'm so glad it did tbh. Introduced me to Harmony Korine, one of my favorite filmmakers

Fetishizing age as wisdom, I would argue, is actually wayyyy more common in almost every other culture

If you told me that was one guy doing all the instruments alone at 2PM on a Tuesday, I would have believed you

They also literally destroyed all the bad music. There were a thousand records from shitty bands that were not preserved so it looks better in retrospect

Cage said he starred in the movie because one of his brothers is a pastor but really I think it's because he just had to be on a cockpit set for like 5 days and get paid $1 million, which I would also happily do.

Argento doesn't have Alzheimers in that movie. In fact, he's a professor who's writing a book and appears on radio shows. It's his wife who has Alzheimers

Those aren't plot holes, and they fail their gig (not an audition) because Emerald isn't paying attention and OJ is bad at talking to people. Those are character flaws, not a flaw with the movie. A plot hole would be something that explicitly defies earlier established logic in the movie

I'd amend this to say that he presents familiar stories in an original way.

Just out of curiosity, I'd like to hear what you think are loose ends or plot holes because I think the movie is exceptionally well written and goes out of its way to not have plot holes

Also, they almost certainly went to some kind of acting school. A lot of film studios are contractually obligated to pay for acting school for younger stars if they're below a certain age. Even if it's just a few months that can make a massive difference
