That's exactly what I (OP) meant. I don't think that Imagine was terrible when Lennon wrote it. Overrated, yes, sentimental, yes, even worse than McCartney's Christmas song, yes. But it wasn't as terrible as it now sounds to me.

It is a rich and multi-faceted book. It's funny, in that it induces wry and bitter smiles, as much as any other SFF novel I've ever read. It is a lot. It is great.

I DNF'd it early. I couldn't stand the prose. For example, there were way too many adjectives.
