Wow, this should really motivate them to win!

Iran has threatened basically everyone, including all it's religious minorities. The islamist regime pays lipservice to any and all human rights, and only allows such minorities to exist, for example in the case of Zoroastrians (visit /r/Zoroastrianism ) as it would cause an internal and external inferno of rage.
Thank you Internet for allowing minorities to get the word out when needed

Obviously, this is the best way to improve morale, foster a spirit of sportsmanship and give players the drive to win. /s
There will probably be a very different Iranian team next year unfortunately. I can just see the Iranian government cracking down on dissent worse than they are now.

It's truly tragic how the families will be treated of those players who might not return to the Islamic republic. I wonder if they're going to be forced to do some sort of bs explanation for how their gesture was supporting their supreme leader.

That was an incredibly brave protest it seems considering how brutally the regime seems to be cracking down on it. I just hope those families don't get punished for the incredibly brave actions but authoritarian regimes seem to love locking up and torturing them.

They'd better hope the US can keep up their draw streak.

The US should offer them asylum in exchange for advancing to the knockout stage. I’m sure that’s never happened before in any international sporting competition.

Doing more more for team USA than the coach 🤣

I really wouldn’t be surprised if the go, “oh, we can’t protest? Fine, we’ll let the Americans magically score a ridiculous amount of goals.”
waffleconedrone t1_iy6nydu wrote
What would happen if both teams refused to score against each other. That would be amazing. Just kick the ball around and have some laughs.

I have a feeling if the Iranian players truly fear for their lives if they lose, they fear the same outcome if they are not obviously trying to win.
waffleconedrone t1_iy6p2ce wrote
Well if I was on the team(usa) I wouldn't.

It’s Iran. Are we surprised that they threaten people let’s not talk about the growing revolution and people that government is killing

Iran advances to the knockout stage if they tie or win, US needs a win to advance out of the group stage.

They're already losing because of the US and Israel.

I would say this would be a great plan but I have a feeling that letting the other teams win will have the same negative outcome as protesting does to these monsters.
randomnickname99 t1_iy8uugn wrote
Oh shit they're playing the US? Damn that'd be crazy if they blatantly threw the game. Like just sit down in the middle of the field and refuse to do anything.
waffleconedrone t1_iy97x1w wrote
That what I was thinking. Would Iran execute their world cup champion team?
