Didn’t Turkey declare that was the proper way to spell it now? Just because I can’t be bothered to do it doesn’t mean we can’t respect them spelling their nation how they want.

I can, since it's weird to single out one country to suddenly start spelling in a bizarre new way for no real reason.

Côte d'Ivoire have requested the same, so not without precedent. I think most still say Ivory Coast or Turkey though

Not really bizarre when that’s how they write “Turkey”.

But it's not how anyone writes it in English.

I mean it’s their country and their government; I don’t think it matters either way how we spell it. If they want to spell it differently then why should we care?

Well, okay then. From now on, I want Finland to be called Suomi and Sweden Sverige. And while we’re at it, Greenland will from now on be referred to by its Greenlandic name Kalaallit Nunaat.

If that was the official position of Finland and Sweden's governments, that would happen quickly enough.

Sure, if Finland, Sweden, and Greenland wanted that - then why would it be a problem? I doubt most people would abide by it, but why would anyone care what they call themselves?
