It's insane how homosexuality has somehow become an evil western influence. Russia is guilty of this kind of propaganda, too.

The irony is that the virulent anti-gay stance in Uganda is the real Western influence, specifically from decades of right wing Christian missionaries.

Russia, being Russia, takes that pulls a DARVO.

Yeah, I was in the navy and many guys from Uganda can (could? Maybe not anymore?) join the armed forces for citizenship and they were openly disgusted to any openly gay service member. The higher ups had a thought time when shit went down and they wanted to follow regulations while staying sympathetic to these indoctrinated homophobes.

What did I witness? Once some guy had his “rack” poured cooking oil in to- sounds stupid but when you’re out in deployment and you’re not hitting port it could be emotionally distressing. The rest were just nasty/crude/harassment of one type or another.

Where do you think its coming from? 70% of age old local cultural prejudice/homophobia + 30% of it from modern day russian propaganda pushing. All part of their anti western propaganda push especially in Africa.

Ugandan homophobia was imported there from United States, by rich ultra-conservative evangelicals.

They offered money and told that in exchange for that, "you could wink wink make life harder for dem gays, because Jesus says so and so do we". They took the bribes and began to pursue that policy. It's sick. Those maggots bribed a government to abuse and kill its own citizens, for not reason at all.

I mean you can't deny that it's far more prevalent in western media than it is in the real world.

So.. is how this works.. that civil-rights inherently mean protection for minorities, which means protection for gay people, so any push for civil-rights can be reframed by oppressive regimes as "promoting homosexuality" and then they can push-back against those civil-rights and people will support it?

The meme 'Why are you gae' originated from an Ugandan talk show. I wonder how or if the viral nature of that meme had any impact on this discussion.

Also, there's one 'western element that is failed to be showcased in this rhetoric.. that is the commodification of children by parents is not acceptable. Your children aren't your objects to sell or to be bartered with. You also don't own your spouse and you don't dictate someone's likes or dislikes as long as it doesn't go against basic laws. (It also ensures children, women and minority groups have educational freedoms that leads to a more educated society).

Corrupt regimes always need an out-group to persecute, in order to distract attention from the corruption.

Allowable substitutes: Commies, Nazis, Trans people, minorities, women, educators, etc.

It's in their rule book, look it up.

While true, I think that's too reductive. There needs to be an appreciation that different places exist on different points of the sociopolitical development curve. Minorities didn't have rights in the West, until they did. We had to get there in our own time. That was a fight and a struggle, even with all the advantages we had. Today it's obviously true that identity and immutable characteristics are not good grounds to deprive people of rights, but everything is obvious after you know the answer. You cannot spin up a modern socially liberal society on demand with no regard for what that society and culture currently is. I think the Afghanistan adventure demonstrates that. If they don't get there on their own, it doesn't stick. Modernity can't be prescribed onto a state. So what part of this is political gamesmanship and what part is organic? I don't know, but it stands to reason it's at least both.

Human rights are human rights regardless of whether the country wants to remain traditional or not. Yes you don’t have to accept certain philosophies but you CAN NOT go and cause harm to people that don’t subscribe to your ideology.
