It's actually a very common, very bad instinct. People like to walk away from crowds and die in the bathroom. Happens alarmingly often with choking.

omg literally me. this wasn't my first rodeo passing out, so i mostly just wanted to do it in privacy instead of panicking a bunch of diners and making a scene lol. ill make sure to keep the advice given to not lock the door in mind for future medical issues

Do you think maybe you should find out why you are passing out? It doesn't sound like a fun rodeo. I mean, rodeos aren't generally fun, but still...

For some people it’s just an overreaction to a perceived threat. Look into vasovagal syncopy

I get that a lot but it is usually caused by dehydration/heat/standing up too quickly, always a fun time though.

Okay first off, rodeo's aren't fun? They sound like a blast. And second, he passed out because he gave blood and then drank, its literally in the title lol

I wonder if it's a long forgotten instinct for self-preservation? Like a need to protect yourself from potential harm while unable to stay alert.

I think it's more related to shame/embarrassment, just like OP replied. They don't want to "make a scene" so they go to the bathroom, not realizing how serious the situation is. Especially with choking, they think they could cough/vomit it up but lose consciousness and no one is aware to save them. It's terrifying actually. Bring a friend on your shame bathroom trips friends!
