As someone who loves the story of the original, I have to ask, what is the point of this remake in TV format? I don’t see the series becoming anything more than a streamlined version of the game’s story and the actors, however good they are, just doing the same as the game, which already had a great amount of depth in each character. I know it’s meant to bring more viewers to the franchise who don’t play games, but what do you guys think it has that is new or newly effective in its format as a tv show?

Most people have said TLOU and Wool, but let's not forget The White House Plumbers, True Detective S4 and Love & Death.

Edit: removed returning shows, didn't catch that.

I think it's the opposite of streamlining it. Because of the change in format it means that there's no reason to move the story along through encounters the way the game does. Something Neil spoke about in a recent interview is that Craig made the call to only keep the violence that's "very essential". That of course will heighten those moments in effectiveness when they do hit.

It also means that we spend more time with these characters and they can flesh them out more. And the relationships in the series is ultimately its heart. Expanding on that is something that even longtime fans can appreciate. They've also talked about some spoiler-ish stuff that would simply be impossible to pull off in a game, and it's something that will absolutely make effective use of this new format.

I’m planning on watching Mayfair Witches and The Last of Us which come out soon, but other than that I only have a couple returning shows on my radar (Shadow and Bone season 2, Carnival Row season 2)

I’ll definitely be looking through the other responses here for more things to look forward to.

Nobody said Vox Machina? The first season was really good and I hope the rest will follow its lead. For those that don’t know, a bunch of voice actors got together and started a DnD campaign. They started recording it and it took off from there.

I'm excited to see how it's adapted. I've never really had something that I like this much be adapted before, so I'm curious to see how it turns out. It's also the first video game adaptation I've heard of that seems to have a fighting chance of being good.

As for this being streamlined, I don't think I agree. Based on the promotional material HBO has put out so far, it seems like they're doing the opposite. Roles of more auxiliary characters appear to be expanded, and I believe there are new characters.

What I'm also curious about is how this will impact the video game series if it gets a second season. As it stands right now, there are only two games, so if the second game becomes the second season, I wonder how or if they would continue the game series.

I read the books. They basically did something similar with higher dimensional stuff in Inception although that was toned down but the idea is that you could see everything at the same time. A 4-d being or object in 3-d space would be pretty easy. Imagine a tiger but made up of floating 3-d droplets with space in between those droplets. That’s one interpretation of how a 4-d thing would appear to us. Although there is basically none of that in this book series.

You forget D&D were great at adapting the first few seasons. It’s only when they needed to start planning an end game that the show turned mediocre (around Season 5-6). This series is completed.

$200 Million confirmed for a multi-project Netflix deal with D&D.

$1 Billion rumoured offer from Amazon for the rights to the series.

Nothing concrete, but if Netflix spent Rings of Power money on securing the rights then you'd expect the budget would be in the hundreds of millions.

Maybe someone who knows the books better can tell you how expensive they think it would be to make.

E.g. Is it near future, or full on Bladerunner? A little VFX, or half the movie?

Honestly the main thing is so I can introduce people who don’t game into the story. I’ve wanted to share this story with everyone for so long and now I can. Like my sister doesn’t and never will game, but she will love this show. Now we can share the Joel Ellie experience together
