You dont need to have seen S1, it has 2 characters from the first season, but the story is totally new, and no relevant refereances are made.

Yeah I think their relationship and history are explained during this season as well.

They are not though? So much of the relationship is left unsaid. Watching s1 is important to see how the relationship started.
