Oh I had thought these sorts of things were only in the later seasons, bc I keep hearing how the first 4 are imoeccable and brilliant

Not sure where you are hearing that.

Dexter is barely above network television writing quality, it just has cable content (violence, sex, etc.). It's like Sons of Anarchy and stuff like that.
