I loved the MAGA dog sequence in episode 3. I was laughing so hard my sides hurt. Lyonne plays the part extremely well. The last few episodes have been less funny, however. Still, the show has great potential.

It was kind of refreshing seeing a dog not portrayed as some perfect angel, it’s like people forgot asshole dogs exist. I literally stopped taking walks in my neighborhood after almost getting attacked by a dog and no, it was not a pitbull.

I agree. I still >!didn't want to see him beat to death with a piece of wood, though.!<

Also, how did you get a Psych flair? I went to the sidebar and I didn't see any flairs available to choose.

I know, that was hard to watch. I was happy that MAGA dog got a nice owner at the end and especially that he seemed to have calmed down.

I set my flair years ago through the sidebar. I hope the mods didn’t take away the option, maybe message them to ask.

One of the best shows on television right now in my opinion. Has a travelling Columbo vibe to it.

79

lolly____plop t1_j9rcs64 wrote

100% Columbo vibes. There’s even an episode of Columbo where the crime plays out in the reflection of the murderer’s sunglasses that I swear the Poker Face posters/billboards are referencing.

My husband and I have done a couple double features on Thursdays - one episode of Poker Face followed by one episode of Columbo. It’s extra satisfying when the plots kind of line up!

23

FatDrunkBastard t1_j9tgyxg wrote

That's a cool idea! I noticed that even the font for the credits is very similar to Columbo. I think the writer is a fan.

You should curate a collection of matching episodes, so for every Poker Face episode you know what similar Columbo episode to watch. That would be pretty cool.

Loving it so far. I really like how they set up the new characters each week. In most crime procedurals, we get 30 seconds to meet someone before they die. Poker Face actually introduces us and makes us care about them.

This is what Agatha Christie's stories and their adaptations so good. The murder usually only happens at the end of the first act or halfway through the novel, where we get a good look at how the victim interacted with the suspects to get an understanding as to why they would want the victim dead.

A great example of this is the film version of Evil Under The Sun, where Poirot is asked to go in holiday to help confront a suspected jewel thief and along the way, we see the victim interacting with the other characters and it's made clear that nearly everyone has a reason to want her dead. She's only murdered halfway through the film, with the first half revealing;

  • She jilted her ex-fiancé to go off and marry another man, stealing a million-dollar diamond from him in the process;
  • She's secretly brought the man she's cheating on her newlywed husband with on her honeymoon;
  • She's rubbing it into the face of her affair's own wife;
  • She's a truly wicked stepmother;
  • She's screwed her publicist out of thousands by refusing to sign off on the release of a book;
  • She bailed on a major Broadway production and got it cancelled three weeks into a six-month contract, leaving her bosses broke;
  • She may have ruined a rival actress' career and is currently married to the man the other actress is in love with.

Edit: Also, fun fact - the victim in that film, Arlena Marshall, was played by Diana Rigg AKA Olenna Tyrell in Game of Thrones.

4

josephgee t1_j9stf02 wrote

Phil Tippet is the storied stop motion animator who worked at ILM (clearly referenced with the name LAM).

More recently he released a horror passion project decades in the making (like the movie in the episode), Mad God.

The docuseries Light and Magic that was released last year was pretty good, he also did an AMA recently

Also, though there wasn't really any doubt Rian Johnson confirmed this tribute on Twitter: https://twitter.com/rianjohnson/status/1628812461582213120

matlockga t1_j9t6p6u wrote

Thanks for the details which I missed on delivering! I only noted Allen as part of the whole mix, as he was a fellow stop motion guy who pretty much retreated to direct to video stuff right after Twilight Zone.

It's bizarre to think that making a show that uses the old style actually feels risky and refreshing now.

It's definitely a love letter to the procedurals of the 70s/80s/90s. There are so many references trickled in. Similar to how Knives Out references the classic whodunnit movies.

But the pacing here makes it feel modern as well. Ep6 had about 4 layers of surprise mixed in to keep us on our toes.

The whole show is great, but the 1st episode is a master class in scriptwriting. I loved the dynamic of the bad guys knowing she is a human lie detector and carefully wording their answers so they weren't technically lying, but still sounding like a fairly natural conversation. Adrian Brody was especially amazing. And Natasha Lyonne is fantastic in every episode. It takes an old concept and just executes it perfectly. One of my favorite new shows in recent memory.

14

l3reezer t1_j9uqeir wrote

1st episode is probably the worst one IMO but I give it a pass because it needs to set everything up. I wouldn't say it's the only episode that does that cat-and-mouse game of the culprit knowing about Charlie's ability and maneuvering around it. The guy in the racing episode did it arguably more so

Thanks for sharing. Yes, I knew Peacock was US only but I wanted to check if this show has streaming rights in your country with another platform or channel. Believe it or not, for example even though HBOMAX is available in the US and South America, some US content might not be available in HBOMAX South America, but it is available in South America on Amazon Prime, Paramount+, Netflix or Star+ (Star+ is Hulu in South America). I just checked but it’s still unavailable in Hungary on any streaming platform. Hopefully you get it soon, or if you have a VPN you can also subscribe to Peacock to watch it that way if you don’t want to pirate it 😂.

1

pinpoint321 t1_j9t8a6h wrote

Yes and no. There’s a new crime each week usually a murder but it’s not a mystery as we are shown who did it at the start. Also there is a kind of thread. It’s a bit Columbo, a bit Murder She wrote and a whole lotta Natasha Lyonne.

3

HowManyMeeses t1_j9ty3tg wrote

Sort of. There is a new mystery each week, but you get some spoilers about it in the first few minutes. Then you watch the main character wander through the story putting together clues. Some of the stories play out as expected while there are little twists and turns in them that add context. It's a pretty fun premise.

2

MonolithJones t1_j9te9c2 wrote
