The real future of AI lawyers is to do research and write drafts for human lawyers. Small firms will be able to provide better service and Big Law will save millions on staffing.

Somebody said Public Defenders, and it will help there too, I'm sure. But government will also use it as an excuse to continue not properly funding that service.

I'm really not looking forward to the inevitable: when AI starts doing a lot of this low-level/foundational work, people are going to see it as a wonderful scapegoat for anything that goes wrong in their projects, or for malicious people to shift liability. "The AI got the analysis wrong" or "The AI missed this parameter" or whatnot. At some point there will be a court case where real people were harmed, and the AI gets blamed while the people responsible are let off the hook.

AI needs accountability, and that is woefully missing right now. We already have half of the country wanting AIs to be racist and tell horrible jokes on command, and get mad when the AI refuses to do that. I don't see how our society can handle the AI implementations we're witnessing. It's not going to go well.

There are mistakes now. And low level staffers get blamed for them. If it's bad enough, the staffer will get fired and replaced by someone of (probably) equal ability.

So the real question will be: Are the AI mistakes worse and/or more numerous than the human mistakes?

What a silly headline, great things take time.

All these human-replacing bots and tech. Where are the humans going? Remind me again, why are we taking jobs away from humans? How is this good for us?

AI lawyers will be the new public defenders. There will be an app you can download. The app will use your microphone when you are being interrogated and advise you.

Man, I’m sure this is a crazy take; Why are you relying on lawyers to keep you out of jail as opposed to not doing things that get you sent to jail?

In the US, law is an adversarial system. The DA is gonna come swinging at you with everything he's got with the expectation that your lawyer is going to do the same. The results of that fight we call justice.

The law isn't set up for 1st round knockouts. Even in slam dunk, definitely guilty cases, the law is set up expecting a defense attorney to mitigate the damage.

If the goal is for a petty thief to get 2 years in prison, the DA is gonna aim for 10 years expecting a fight or a negotiation down to about 2 years. But there's no mechanism for the DA to go easy on you because your lawyer sucks or doesn't exist. If you don't fight the charges or negotiate something you get petty crooks in jail way longer than normal. That's why we have public defenders. It's the law saying, "it's not much, but it just wouldn't even be sporting otherwise."
