The fact that Classic Rock coffee is 2nd place on a list that doesn’t even have Coffee Ethic shows you the exact demographic of people who vote in this.
mb10240 t1_j7pt9qf wrote
Might be downvoted into hell, but Coffee Ethic is overpriced and isn’t as good as Mudhouse.
ThumYorky t1_j7pwufm wrote
CE is expensive but the quality of their roasts is very high. I’ve always felt like I’m getting my money’s worth.
If you’re looking flavored or latte drinks Mudhouse is fantastic. But if you’re like me and a huge nerd/fan of single origin light roast, CE is by far the best options. And tbh, they’re not as expensive as other third-wave shops in other cities.
cusini t1_j7q1atl wrote
I’m with you. I don’t think it’s overly expensive either.
Cthepo t1_j7pvv0e wrote
I'd conceed overpriced. I think their black coffee is better, but Mudhouse does things like lattes better. IMO it's hard to qualify coffee shops because you can have so many different things on the menu.
Redditor_PC t1_j7sxwoq wrote
I agree that Coffee Ethic definitely deserves a spot on the list, but I adore Classic Rock too. Two of my fave shops in town.
Trixxxxxi t1_j7n7q6x wrote
Pretty much. Most of the places listed are fine and good, but nothing special about most of them.

The fact that Mexican Villa even makes it on the list is very, very, very telling. I’ll go ahead and disregard the results of this list lol.

If anything it legitimizes the list. Looks like y’all are wrong about the Villa.

How is Mexican Villa on here at all and no mention of Perches??
Or Thai Express over Everyday Thai for that matter?

It's a popularity contest chosen by voters, so that should be taken into account.
I keep wanting to get Michelin to send critics for local restaurants, but they keep refusing.

So it's just like Reddit then. Just with a different demo.

No restaurants here rise to the level of even 1 Michelin star. Not that every restaurant is bad, just that Michelin has standards.

I'm not sure any restaurants here would be a 3 star in a AAA guidebook. Forget about Michelin!

I saw this yesterday, and I think the most conspicuously bad results are #1 and #2 in Chinese. I really don't like those winners for Sweet Treats either. And these lists always make me feel sad about the pizza options in this town.
Globalksp OP t1_j7mxamc wrote
Speaking for the pizza... yes. However, at least the editors called out Therefore Pizza. And while it's by far not my favorite style, Pizza House has a passable tavern style pie. But, yes the city deserves (maybe? I'm hoping so) better pizza. Hang tight ;)
For me the most conspicuously bad result is the fine dining category! Neither Progress nor The Order nor Harvest are listed and those are the top 3 in town.
banjomin t1_j7myfth wrote

Globalksp OP t1_j7nfhvv wrote
It’s my goal to not rag on anyone as I assume everyone is trying. That said, I’ve never even heard of Jimm’s so meant it less as a jab to them.
Also people here seem unable to withstand criticism of Springfield. Maybe it’s the Jersey in me, but I’m capable of both love and honesty.
cmiller727 t1_j7ntip8 wrote
I genuinely like Jimms but also agree that its not in the top 3 for fine dining!
Wyldfire2112 t1_j7rh7ve wrote
Jimm's has been around for forever, though it used to be under a different name. It was originally called Steak & Ale, then the owners retired and sold the place to one of the staff, Jim, who renamed it Jimm's and kept the place going.
Used to be the best steakhouse in town up until the last few years when quality has slipped, plus they emphasize quality service and have a very nice ambiance, which is likely why it gets so many fine dining votes.
People know and love the place, and many have probably never heard of the other two. I know I haven't.
417SKCFAN t1_j7rw774 wrote
You’re a bit off on the history. Steak and Ale was a national chain that went bankrupt and closed in 2008. Ownership didn’t change hands, Jimm Swafford was the manager of Steak and Ale, the building owner was Errett Sechler who wasn’t interested in running the place when it closed, but a year later changed his mind and let Jimm open and run the place as a tenant. Sechler died in 2019 and the family sold their properties, including Plaza Tower’s and Jimm’s to Marco Denis.
Wyldfire2112 t1_j7ry20i wrote
Ah, my bad. Thanks for clearing that up.
Saltpork545 t1_j7tst6j wrote
This, plus I wouldn't be at all surprised if 417mag didn't include young professionals. I've spent 17 years in Springfield, all of my 20s and most of my 30s and I've paid attention to what 417mag says like 10 times, including this.
I remember Steak & Ale. It was good. Far from the best but good. It was an old school steakhouse and so is Jimm's. I haven't been in several years so I can't say anything about the quality post covid. When I want a steak I go buy one and make it myself.

Bad. Bad list.
Wyldfire2112 t1_j7rdp9o wrote
It's a popular vote. Amazing how many people slamming the list because their favorite isn't where they want it don't understand this is a popular vote.
It's not on the list because not enough people voted for it. Period. End of story.
Doesn't matter how good the food is if they don't have a big enough fanbase, and I've never heard of Harvest before now.
FrankTankly t1_j7revqq wrote
I understand that, and it’s all well and good. But popularity unfortunately does not equal quality, so what is even the point of this list?
They even brand it as “Best” of 417, which is a misnomer if all they’re doing is tallying popularity, so again, what’s even the point? By this logic McDonalds should absolutely top several categories.
And look Harvest up, it’s fantastic.
Wyldfire2112 t1_j7rizn8 wrote
People wouldn't vote for McDonald's as their favorite Fast Food joint, though.
The idea is that they go and ask people what their favorite food places are, and the ones the most people say are their favorite are "the best."
FrankTankly t1_j7rmm7n wrote
I absolutely know people who would vote for McDonalds as their favorite fast food place, unfortunately.
My point, again, is that if all this boils down to a popularity contest, then why even do it? And if it’s going to be done regardless, then why not be transparent with how the list is presented. “Most popular in 417” would attract just as much attention and then would avoid all this nonsense about what restaurants are “better” than others.
Wolverkeen t1_j7o8fzc wrote
And the winners are..........the same restaurants that have won for the past 8-15 years. Why? Because 417 is a magazine for dentist office waiting rooms and semi-affluent straight white people.
Put me on that list, because 417 Magazine just got ROASTED and SERVED.
