Furthermore she is 1 of only 7 women that managed to win a race in all 5 disciplines. In the age of specialization instead of all-rounding, this is hugely impressive.

Never heard of night skiing? They got lights.

The coaches also go up with headlamps to set courses before it’s light out

6 Victories in 7 events (3 GS, 2 SL and 1 SG). She now has the same amount of wins as Lindsey Vonn, only 4 away from the all time record by Ingemar Stenmark.

As long as she stays healthy she should easily pass that mark.

It's lining up to possibly happen in Åre, which would be so fitting.

Agreed. You're just constantly left wondering where she's finding the time when her style actually looks way less active and slower.

tbendis t1_j3hq945 wrote

Kostelić used to ski like this, just slow gliding through the turns, and it just looks so clean, and it's deceptively fast

Progression28 t1_j3l84h3 wrote

You mean Janica, right? Because Ivica I would not equate to slow gliding haha.

Although I was very young when they were still active, so memory might be a bit foggy.

Janica was always, Ivica had one season of glory that was magnificent.

She was already a world champion heading into the olympics as she won the year prior as a 17 year old. Crazy stuff.

Good to see this. I was hoping the Olympics last year was just a bump in the road

SkiThe802 t1_j3i45ns wrote

The more she keeps winning the more confusing the Olympics appear. She wins 1/3rd of the races she enters, and I can't even think of a race she didn't earn a second run in.

NSSLMVP t1_j3isnyq wrote

Unfortunately I think she builds certain races up in her head and then it effects her performance. I actually think the Killington races demonstrate this the best. Despite having performed well there I’ve always felt her demeanor at the finish was that of relief and not excitement. I think she feels the pressure to perform for the home town crowd. I think the same thing happened with the Olympics. She felt the weight of the country on her shoulders. Her interviews after those races were uncomfortable to watch and I think the stress and anxiety just got the best of her that week. It was unfortunate but I don’t think it’s a stain on her career. Regardless of what records she breaks I’ve always felt she will be the best ski racer, woman or man, I’ll see in my lifetime.

patsboston t1_j3knr2d wrote

To be fair, she was still dealing with the mental effects of the death of her father then. That was huge on her.

Capt-Crap1corn t1_j3ltv83 wrote

I agree regarding those interviews. She was clearly going through it.

1

Capt-Crap1corn t1_j3ltnxo wrote

Yeah that was sad to see during the Olympics, but understandable. Aside from the usual, it seems like she had alot going on.

She is unquestionably top 5 all time and in the GOAT discussion if she retires today.

Two more overall World Cup titles and one more Olympic gold would remove any doubt.

mate, you‘re American.

Skiing is huge in the alpine countries. Switzerland and Austria have a huge skiing culture. Just look at footage from Adelboden this past weekend.

The Olympics are special, sure. But the big crystal ball is in every way more prestigious. Olympic ski slopes don‘t even hold the same prestige as the Lauberhorn or Streif. China held a great olympic ski event cause they built quite a spectacular slope, but generally the olympic slopes are quite shit because they are forced to be held on non ideal mountain slopes where not much is possible.

I certainly am not trying to take away anything from Shiffrins accomplishments. She’s obviously a phenomenal skier and deserves the recognition and title of “GOAT” But Vonn was primarily a downhill skier and suffered several high speed crashes. And numerous setbacks due to injuries. Both are exceptional skiers but I feel in different categories. You can’t compare a mogul expert to a aerial specialist although both are technically skiers. I’m certainly pulling for Shiffrin to take the title.

SkiThe802 t1_j3i4pnr wrote

You are clearly unaware of Lindsey's early-career successes in the tech events. Shiffrin still hasn't transitioned to racing mostly speed events like many ski racers do when they are later in their careers.
