Yep, I agree. The litmus test should be if winning an Olympic gold medal is the highest aspiration for the athlete and/or team in question. In running, swimming, archery, gymnastics -- etc, etc -- that is a definite yes. But soccer, cricket, tennis, baseball, rugby? No way. Therefore, don't include as it's unnecessary bloat.

Sure olympics is a major event. But its a fact that the event is usually a loss making investment for the hosts.
>Every single Olympics since 1960 has gone over budget.
Most sports are barely watched by people at the venues, so increased tourism is in itself a hoax. Tracks & infra development cant be used later turning into NPA eventually. Sports like cricket, rugby can actually bring the viewership. Adding more water sports is just going to increase the irrelevant costs with low returns. There's always debate around wrestling, boxing, which brings large viewership from asian countries.
And for anyone representing in a sport, the highest aspiration isn't the event, its winning for the team/country.

I agree but cricket needs to spread outside of the British Commonwealth. Soccer and basketball are fine

That's every team sport though. That's like saying "if it wasn't in the Olympics already it shouldn't be in now" because anything people play in more than 1 country will have a world cup.

Unpopular opinion: the only important thing in the Olympics is the 100m - who's the fastest person.
free_spoons t1_ix1kfiv wrote
Cooler opinion: the winner of the 100m should race the winner of the marathon in the 1500m

Might be but as it stands now being an Olympic sport is must in many countries. In Czechia it is the only way how to get some meaningful government funding.

Okay but why did the article choose to use a photo of a baseball field?
Buckeye_8621 OP t1_iwx42fe wrote
Cause next Olympics is in USA and that's where they will prob play it

Oh I just noticed the pitch. I don’t know why, but for some reason I always assumed a cricket game wouldn’t fit in a baseball field.
Buckeye_8621 OP t1_iwx4u05 wrote
Yea it's pretty hard to fit. Most Rugby and AFL grounds are perfect for cricket though
D_Neon t1_iwxjkmc wrote
Most rugby stadiums couldn't fit a cricket pitch unless built to pull seating away to make room.

eden park is an example

...of exactly what I said: https://www.austadiums.com/stadiums/eden-park/seating-map
It also has more space away from the sidelines than most rugby stadiums anyway.

yea i was saying most AFL stadium are used for rugby and cricket. The SCG, MCG, and Adelaide oval were made for cricket originally and then made into afl grounds. while perth stadium is a afl stadium that is also now used for cricket. Outside of nz/aus its all cricket only stadiums
