So Meta now have an AI capable of human level social manipulation. Wonderful! If anyone needs me, I'll be wandering the woods laughing maniacally and trying to make myself king of the squirrels.

Edit: Just to be clear, I do understand this is the game 'Diplomacy', but it still involves some level of social interaction and planning. So my point stands, thankyou, have a nut.

"For the first time, according to a new study shared with Gizmodo by Meta’s Fundamental AI Research Diplomacy Team, researchers trained an AI to attain “human level performance” in the war strategy board game Diplomacy. The new AI agent, named after the classical statesman and scholar who witnessed the fall of the Roman Republic, was able to effectively communicate and strategize with other human players, plan best methods for victory, and in some cases, even pass as a human. Now, the researchers say Cicero, which accomplished its tasks by combining dialogue and strategic reasoning models, stands as a “benchmark” for multi-AI agent learning."

Title got me! — Diplomacy the war strategy board game.

Diplomacy is a great game and although the AI's performance wasn't phenomenal, that level of competence is probably only one or two updates away. I'm not sure we should be training AIs to manipulate us, but I guess it's inevitable.

Interestingly, I just read Sid Meier's memoir (released 2020) and he's surprisingly skeptical of advanced AI.

His view seems to be that AI can simulate smart behavior in specific cases (Civilization) but not approach real intelligence. Not sure I agree, but he's Sid Meier.

Hmmm, makes sense, I’ve never seen an AGI victory. He should catch up. 😅

AGI winning AGI victory.

Winning 2 subsequent rounds of Diplomacy should be mandatory for high school graduation.
