I went twice the other day, once for coffee and laptop work in the morning and once for wine at night. I really liked it.

Sometimes I’ll read an entire article on a place and still have no idea exactly what it’s going to be.

So is this a non-profit that’s gonna be propped up by successful artists or something? They spend most of the article kinda laying out why it can’t possibly be a profitable venture but don’t really address how that will work. Otherwise it just seems like hipster fever dream of mish mashed cool but esoteric ideas

Edit: there is a line in there about Ars Nova being funded by grants and that ticket sales will only be 20% of the bankroll. I guess the fountain porter guy gets all the drink/food business and they get a place to stage their shows, while splitting the rent. Odd setup but I guess it might work. Still seems like it will have a short shelf life if I had to guess

Cue the haters who will comment saying how stupid the name is and that they wish it was a venue that would host anything else but. Admittedly the name is a little silly. For those who don’t know or didn’t read the article it’s a Sun Ra reference. Yeah yeah, we get it. Everything is Sun Ra. Sun Ra is everything. 🙄 But as a fan of ARS Nova shows for many years now, I’m very excited that this place exists and can easily get past the name. I’ve lived in the area for a good while now. I went to the second ever boot and saddle show, have talked with old timers at work about the original boot and I also frequent fountain porter. The original boot and saddle was great but the acts that came through have many places to book in this city. The kind of shows that Solar Myth puts on puts us in contention with NYC for acts that would potentially otherwise pass us over. I’ve been to three shows now and the energy is amazing. Many shows have been selling out and people are showing up. Also to note on the boot and saddle name. R5 owns that name. ARS was not allowed to name the venue boot and saddle. They probably wouldn’t have but it was never an option. The sign itself is a historic landmark and can’t be taken down. Not that ARS would. The music is not for everyone but those who are into it and into it. I’d say search the act’s coming through and give a listen. If something peeks your interest come out. Although recordings of the music for a lot of these acts don’t translate to live performances honestly. Very different vibe. But it’s also just a bar. Grab a coffee, grab a beer. Relax. Check it out. Or don’t. Go birds. 🫡

Man that is a horrible name. Sounds like a terrible 80s scifi

The lack of light is something I was worried about but the vibe was just moody and nice. The design work in there is good- somebody did a good job compensating/working with what they had

If they wanted to use a Sun Ra name they shoulda gone with Door of the Cosmos

Their description of the aesthetic and business model is definitely not for me at all and I’m still salty B&S closed essentially in a panic move by a corporation.

That said, I’m going to root for any new small business and might get coffee there sometime and reserve my judgement until then, even if it sounds like they’re trying way too hard to fill a niche that nobody is asking for.

Boot & Saddle's closure hit pretty hard. I lived within walking distance and it was a great beacon in the area. Really great acts showed up there for inexpensive ticket prices. When it closed it was like a blacking out and dimming a shining light in the area both figuratively and literally with that gorgeous neon sign being unlit. I'm glad the torch is carried on as a venue, though.
