I want to be absolutely clear that it's more having no idea what I'm doing than anything because I've never had the ability to do so before

But I've applied for places and not gotten them due to what I can only assume is lower credit than other people applying for them

Then you are doing something wrong and it's time to get an agent or friend to help you out. There is really no reason why you shouldn't be able to get a place if you have the money for it.
