If you're worried about crime and transportation the obvious solution, as always, is to get a bike or scooter. My gf rides 15 miles a day, counting to and from work. Often this is after dark and through tons of neighborhoods. If there is some skeevy dude on the street and you're on the scooter you know what you do? Just zoom past him.
