About time. The roads aren't even paved there. So blighted and under-utilized. I'll bet someone will start complaining about the displacement of tire shops and historic parking lots.

Driving through Willets Pt made me question whether I accidentally took a wrong turn in San Diego to end up in Tijuana.

Hopefully they put an entertainment area right across the street from the stadium so people can hang out before and after events.

Growing up going to shea/citi I had massive culture shock going to the area around Fenway and wrigley and realizing… there’s usually bars around baseball stadiums.

Have you never been to Yankee stadium ?

myassholealt t1_isw8czh wrote

They're a Met fan. As am I and my first and only time going to Yankee stadium was the new one as a guest of someone who got comped tickets behind home plate. Otherwise I would still be at 0 for visits there. AL baseball always feels boring to me. For a long time it was the DH. Now it's just a carryover feeling.

Pool_Shark t1_isxif0l wrote

Yeah but growing up in the area as a baseball fan it’s surprising to have not gone to a single game at both stadiums

nychuman t1_isxd2g1 wrote

Interesting. AL baseball has always been more exciting to me mostly due to having had higher runs scored on average (probably due to DH).

What’s so exciting about watching pitchers hit? DH is usually a slugger that adds depth to the lineup.

I guess it’s all opinion.

I just liked the unknown. In reality it's usually an out, but when a pitcher gets a hit is exciting. Trying to figure out if the manager will pull the pitcher cause he's dealing but the team's down 1 run in the 7th and the pitcher is batting 2nd next inning. I miss bunts being a more regular part of the game.

DeGrom's magical first half in 2021 before he got injured included his batting .400. We'll never see that again.

The main exits of Yankee Stadium empty out either to the west or the south, where there are no bars. The few times I visited the new Yankee Stadium, the flood of people went straight to the subway, bypassing all the bars and nightlife.

Pool_Shark t1_isxihm7 wrote

Okay but there’s still a whole block of bars if you make a left

Nah, most stadiums are surrounded by vast parking lots and adjacent to highways. Fenway and Wrigley are in the (obviously better) minority.

Fuck a casino. Get us an NYCFC stadium there.

I don't know if that illustration(thumbnail) is accurate but, it would make more sense to have that building with restaurants, bars and/or casino directly across the street.

This is a silly thought. There's a LOT of parking by Citi Field. Why not put some housing on the parking lots adjacent to the subway station? This is no way all that parking is necessary.

TonyzTone t1_isvp2a8 wrote

Because it was vociferously protested against just a few years ago because it's public land and thus, should remain public for the benefit of the Mets not private for the benefit of the citizens of New York.

14

Open-Abbreviations18 t1_isvpsr3 wrote

Yes it's public land so it should be used for some mixed use developments, not for some baseball team whose fans mostly take the LIRR and subway to go to anyways.

The park lot can often get filled, they also use that land to generate a ton of revenue for the city and the park.

It’s also built on a swamp, you’re not building much there.

Open-Abbreviations18 t1_iswa3zj wrote

Isn't Willets Point also build on a swamp? Yet it's being built up without too much concern in that regard.

More green space can help against flooding and drainage issues. I think a giant field of green would be more beneficial than a parking lot imo

1

TeamMisha t1_isyio8b wrote

As another poster mentioned there is some arcane ruling/law about the parking lot being public land, Citi Field owners want to transform a lot of it but are roadblocked. I think that's where they wanted to put a soccer stadium at one point.

1

Groundbreaking_Tank2 t1_isxeoeo wrote

They really need some housing/mixed use on that giant parking lot.

Come on this is a stadium in the city with its own transit stop.

7

Fresh720 t1_isxxfrt wrote

Agreed, less parking means more development and people are less likely going to drive there so the traffic will be less insane on game days.

This is much needed, willets point is a dead zone currently. My concern with this is the area is pretty much a flood zone due to lack of greenspace and the area of the parking lot. If this is to be done we need the flushing bay LTCP now
