>According to police, the steering column had prior damage that apparently allowed the pooch to accidentally place the truck in drive. The leash the dog was wearing is also believed to have gotten caught on the emergency brake, releasing it.

My family dog manages to pop our car into neutral once. This was back in the 70s. We knew he would gnaw on the gearshift occasionally because of tooth marks. My mom parked the car on a slight incline. Went into the pharmacy to get her prescription and came back to find the car missing. It was at the bottom of the parking lot in a ditch. Thank God no injuries or damage. The dog was in the back physically farthest away from the steering column as he could get and when he saw her he somehow managed to wag only the last three inches of his tail. It was a total I fucked up move

I'm really confused here. I've never seen an automatic with a shifter on the column and bumping a manual into drive wouldn't happen.
