The dude started on the wrong trail without a paper map and compass, barely any actual food to cook with his portable stove, and two large knives. Killed a rattlesnake inside the trail cabin he slept in but didn't bother trying to cook and eat it. Then to top his streak of stupidity, he set a tree on fire then walked away hoping it would signal aid. Fuck him

Yeah he should Definitely should be held accountable for his negligence.

I think a fair punishment would be to require him to replant trees where they were decimated by the fire. He could do it on weekends and still keep his regular job. If he has one.

psilocin72 t1_ja7e5yv wrote

I could go for that. I would want him to use his own money for it or repay any money that is spent on it.

17 miles isn’t even hard- didn’t this guy also drink his own pee because he didn’t bring enough water? He wasn’t even out there a full day correct?

Nickpb t1_ja84ceg wrote

No he was out there for longer than a full day. He ended up having to sleep in a cabin on the trail. To be fair he did develop rhabdomyolysis which is extremely painful and makes walking almost impossible without searing pain. BUT he only developed this because he didn't bring nearly enough water and picked a trail he wasn't capable of doing

The judge said he could pay the $293,000 restitution in monthly installments of $200. Sounds like the judge wanted him held liable but didn't want to ruin his life over it.

notamentalpatient t1_ja17hgr wrote

It will take him a little over 122 years of payments to meet that total.

Judges sometimes shit me to tears. The point would to be ruin the arsonists life, otherwise it is not a punishment!

Why is the only punishment to ruin someone’s life?

Koshekuta t1_ja39vhs wrote

I don’t know the details to the case but I do believe some people do not wish to live peacefully within society. Those people ideally should be exiled but we don’t do that so yeah if they are actively against societal norms and are seeking to cause harm then it is only retribution they should face.

Seantwist9 t1_ja3ahz4 wrote

I think we should rehabilitate them and not let them back until they’re ready, within reason. But in this case this guy was either sick or a dumbass he set a tree on fire to call for help

Lead_cloud t1_ja3x3gv wrote

This wasn't malicious arson, the dude is just an idiot. The punishment fits, I think

He lit a fire in bushland and then just walked away from it? Without realising he was endangering lives and property?

1

Lead_cloud t1_ja4o73j wrote

He's a dumbass that got himself lost, and lit a fire to try and make a "smoke signal" to get rescued, which naturally immediately got out of control because he's a dumbass.

RobsEvilTwin t1_ja4xwh0 wrote

Maybe I am overly sensitive to deliberately lit bushfires mate :D We have had some horrific ones that were deliberately lit.

Lead_cloud t1_ja4z9u4 wrote

Yeah, I remember watching coverage of those over the last couple of years, so I completely understand that

12altoids34 t1_ja79cg9 wrote

Are you sure they weren't caused by Jewish space lasers?

2

RobsEvilTwin t1_ja79rtr wrote

I think those only work in Dumbfuckistan mate :D

The formula is pretty simple. Warmer than usual winter, late wet season, equals a shit ton of dry fuel without the normal window for a winter burnoff.

Huge fuel supply, throw in lightning strikes, the occasional idiot with a cigarette, and a few arsonists and half the country is on fire.

I was intending to make a joke at the expense of Marjorie Taylor green. She's an idiot congresswoman we have in the united states. When California was having massive wildfires at one point she tried to blame them on Jewish space lasers. She was also a Q-anon follower. She's a complete nut job.

The actual title is better:

>Lost Arizona hiker hoped smoke signals would save him. Now he's been convicted of starting forest fire

myeff t1_j9zo040 wrote

Why would you change a perfectly descriptive title like that? I had to actually read the article to figure out what happened and I am outraged;)

StudMuffinNick OP t1_j9zxfk3 wrote

Weird, yeah thats what the title said. When i insert the link, i didnt change the title per Rule #1 and posted. Didnt look and notice the change.
