IANAL, but it seems to me that there's a simple solution:

The Dutch government could:

  1. immediately move to relax its immigration rules for Chinese immigrants.

  2. refuse to arrest anyone for violations of Chinese law

  3. recall its diplomats in China

  4. enforce domestic law on Chinese officials

  5. declare the current batch of Chinese diplomats in the Netherlands persona non grata - basically, "Get out of our country or we'll arrest you."

Some government needs to tell China "either play nicely on the international stage, or don't play at all."

Honestly, #5 is what the entire world needs to do. Or at the very least, every country that China has these illegal police stations in needs to do it.

What a gross understatement, closer to open warfare.

They are in Australia as well China establishing overseas police presence in Australia and around the world https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-10-13/beijing-sets-up-overseas-police-presence-including-in-australia/101512216

And we also have the Chinese-government funded Confucius Institutes at our universities which have been foreign interference, harassing Chinese students and are in the process of being such down.

A friend of mine is married to a Chinese girl. They said they won't ever go back because the Chinese will detain her while trying to convince her to stay in China. After hearing that, I understand why my wife's Chinese friend does not want to go back for a family visit either.

For what will she be detained?

According to her husband, they have no legitimate reason but to try and talk you into staying. The Chinese definitely do things their way.

lol- You're skeptical of a Reddit account that's been active for 13+ years but you hear claims from a Spanish NGO called "Safeguard Defenders" (who Google thinks is an "author,") and that doesn't raise any red flags for you?

Do I know that China manhandles and abuses it's people when they're overseas and behaving in ways that the government doesn't approve of? Yes I do.

Am I going to unquestioningly accept claims that they've set up clandestine police stations- an act that would impinge on a sovereign state's legal authority? No, I'm not.

They are not the only people reporting on this, there have been cases of Chinese nationals/immigrants being followed by suspected Chinese officials in the US. The “police stations thing was already uncovered in Canada and now the Netherlands too.

So this is not an isolated story and backs up a pattern of behavior China has already been found out to be engaged in.

You just blew past everything I said and agreed with me for the most part. I'm fully aware that China's government messes with Chinese nationals in the U.S. and elsewhere.

That is a far cry from clandestine police departments, which would amount to technically invading another country. Outside of China, an authority that wants to bother someone from China is a bully, not a cop.
