Registration is a little paper card you keep in your glove box. I have a nifty little folder for my registration, insurance card, AAA and my get out of jail free PBA card. You get the sticker on your windshield for inspection only, and inspection has become only for emissions for cars newer than 1994 and gas powered. So classics, EVs and Diesels are exempt!

Thank you so much for your help! The DMV said get the car inspected within 14 days, so I have an appointment on Tuesday! I got the NY registration sticker off the windshield so far. Do you think I should scrape the NY inspection sticker off the windshield as well? Or keep that on until they give me a NJ inspection sticker on Tuesday?

Also not sure if I have AAA. I have State Farm insurance and I'll keep that insurance card and registration card in my glove box!

They should have given you a little pink slip. Keep that in your window, it will turn white by sun bleaching within 14 days so you know you get it inspected. You can keep all current stuff on the windshield, the state inspection office I always go to do a great job at removing it. If you're going to pay for inspection I'm sure they'll do it fine too. But I always got the free state one.

AAA is only really needed for people like me who buy a bunch of cheap classic cars that aren't very reliable haha. Hence also why I know the process of registering a car so well lol

Ahh I only have a horizontal white paper slip ahout the inspection? Is that bad?

DMV also left me without a photo ID and took my NY license lol. Who knows how long it will take to get sent to me.

No that’s not bad. If you’re talking about the large white and green double-sided horizontal registration paper that is what they give nowadays.

apocdreams OP t1_j27hp1l wrote

Yes that's exactly what it is! Should I put that in my windshield or leave the NY inspection sticker until I go on Tuesday?

I scraped off my NY stuff the same day I got home from the MVC. A few days later I did the NJ inspection. I did it at the Newark MVC as a “walk-in” and I was literally in and out in five minutes! As for the card yea I just put it on top of my dashboard until the inspection.

Oh really? That's very odd lol. Maybe things have changed a bit since COVID, it's been two years since I bought a used car. And I got my license the same day. But IDK how it works with the whole "Real ID" system. I still have the... Not real one?

1

apocdreams OP t1_j25qqq4 wrote

I couldn't get "the REAL one" because they didn't accept my PSEG mail as a form of ID because "it wasn't the actual bill." But accepted my USPS proof of address piece of mail. So now I gotta go back there by 2025 to upgrade to a REAL.

But yeah. I guess I can stick that long-ish slip in my dashboard for now? Or just leave the NY inspection sticker in there? I feel like NJ DMV set me up for failure.

Meh I'd put the white paper there AND leave the NY one. Hell I drove a land Rover that was out of inspection by 11 years and never got pulled over lol. You'll be fine for Tuesday

apocdreams OP t1_j25r3zu wrote

Thaaaaat's the relief I needed to hear hahaha. I'm like "what if I don't have the right stuff in the windshield or something and before January 3 is here I get pulled over?" You get me haha.

HeyItsPanda69 t1_j25ray3 wrote

Yeah I know lol. Your legal even if you had nothing in your window for 14 days anyway. Just leave em both you'll be fine.

apocdreams OP t1_j25rhph wrote

You're so right. Like it's COMING haha. Couldn't have made the appointment fast enough. So I have NJ license plates front and back of the car, no registration sticker in any fashion except an outline of where my NY one just was and my NY inspection sticker in the windshield and I'll either just keep that alone or also add that white slip.

Slowlookleanroll t1_j26dcws wrote

Why/where did you make an inspection appointment? Inspection is free at the MVC locations and you can go online to see how long the wait is. Your permanent license should take about a week to show up in the mail. As for the NYS inspection sticker, it is useless and invalid now that you have Jersey plates. Scrape it off and clean your windshield nicely before you get the NJ inspection. NJ inspection is emission’s only and takes about 10 minutes.

You're awesome! I'll totally look into inspection at the MVC. I scheduled what I did because I just assumed anything related to the MVC will take longer than 14 days to schedule.

Make sure u go to a free state sponsored inspection station, not a private place that charges. The private places always seem to find issues. I learned that the hard way when we moved to NJ.

Ugh mine is at some sort of Sunoco Ultra place.

The NJ inspection stations are fast and first come first serve. They have cameras set up to see if they are packed. I live near the Secaucus station.

apocdreams OP t1_j2bdilu wrote

That's absolutely excellent. So I can roll up to for example, the Edison one, whenever Google says it's open and get it done?

1

Mysterious_Price_113 t1_j2bn6z3 wrote

Yes, it's free and usually quick. NJ is one of the few states that offers that option.
