Hi, I'm moving to New Haven for work in a couple of months. Looking for a grab bag of recs in the following categories, any info is helpful!

Where to live (I'll be working at Yale but won't be making a ton of money, I like being close to fun things, but I'd love to be near a good park to walk my dog)
Where to go for music and events
Favorite bars that won't be completely crawling with undergrads
Art galleries? Community spaces? I won't know anyone and would love to find community :)

Also, is there a good queer scene here? Any fun spots?

I have an Australian shepherd - good places to let her explore off-leash recs are great too!

Some New Haven things that get less attention: Music/events: for very local, small-room shows there's The Musical Intervention plus Gather and Neverending books; also check weekly at dailynutmeg and artspapernewhaven. Dogs: Edgewood Park is so under-rated, the dog would love; the small Art scene seems ready to take things to another level- the Independent has an article today on one woman's art community and her plans for a space.

Noting that neither will be crawling with undergrads.

If you don’t want to be surrounded by undergrads, East Rock is the place to look (especially for lower cost options; great for dogs). There are lots of great restaurants and bars in that neighborhood as well. East Rock Brewery is one of my favorites. In terms of music and events, Yale has a lot of stuff going on - the Yale Rep, for example - but College St Music Hall also has a lot of artists come through (Toads is filled with undergrads). I love the Yale University Art Gallery and British Art Gallery. I’m not super familiar with the queer scene, but I think it’s pretty active (not sure if Partners is still open…)

Out of curiosity—how does one find the lower cost options in East rock? I’m also going to be new to the city (moving in Feb), and would absolutely love to live there, but even with a roommate everything is prohibitively expensive right now. On Facebook, Craigslist, Zillow, Trulia, the Yale housing site, anything half decent is over $1300 per room. Agh!

Yeah that's what I thought, East Rock is by no means a low-cost option.

Wait till you eventually move to NYC you'll wish it was 1300. Like most yalies you do your time in NH like jail or jale as I call it update your resume then move to NY. It's an age old tradition

Can you even get an apartment for 1300 in east rock anymore?

Elm city games is a great place to hang out. Lots of board games and a pretty solid community. I also used to drink at east rock brewery when I lived over that way.

Blue orchid (Court and Orange St downtown) is a fantastic bar and restaurant. Owned by a gay couple and most of my New Haven LGBTQ+ network has been a result of that place. There's Partners for the younger crowd, but for us younger professionals blue orchid is our queer cheers!

Will you have a car? If so, the Woodbridge dog park is really nice for running around off-leash. Very nice people and well maintained.

They have two sides--a smaller dog side and a bigger dog side, and it's quite nice.

I recommend finding a place near the Edgewood Park. On the Edgewood street side. Closer to Chapel which has a few museums down the road and it’ll lead right in to down town for all the other things you’re looking for. pricing is decent, the area is…… not the safest, but you learn to ignore the monthly shooting.

Art + community spaces

  • Yale British Art Gallery and Yale University Art Gallery (both are across the street from each other
  • Creative Arts Workshop: a ton of pottery, painting, photography, etc classes there for a very reasonable price and even financial aid or payment plans available
  • MakeHaven: I havent been but know it is a makerspace

Your good with the queer section…. As for all the other stuff it’s 1 and done… you’ll be bored after a month.

Everyone downvotes when people say NH is boring but it kinda is. Most bars ARE full of college kids, and there isn't THAT much to do. It's a TINY fucking city with a lot of potential but not much application. I'm not gay, but there like maybe 2 gay bars I've ever heard of in the entire city. The whole downtown area is like 8 blocks where anything happens, maybe less. Let's be honest about what it is. Don't expect NYC. That being said, you can easily go down to NYC too.
