Not sure if OP is totally married to NH as an idea. Burlington could be perfect for what they're looking for.

OP 'need[s] to be able to go to Boston sometimes'. Burlington is a 3 hour, 20 minute drive to Boston.

I do work with people who have the same requirement (Walpole, not Boston)....they don't hate it.
