I’d like to thank whoever suggested Pope Memorial SPCA to look for a cat. I went there today after the quick and easy screening process and came home with a sweet shy-guy that was part of their Lonely Hearts program. He’s been at the shelter since November and now he has his furever home 😻.

They have LOTS of cats, so if you’re interested stop by, I could have adopted them all!

I don’t know if it was me because I’m sure other people did. Either way , I’m glad it worked out!!! Yay!! I’ve had my guy almost a year and I am his 4th home counting spca. Took him until a few months ago before he’d curl up on me in bed. He’s a great cat but was timid for a while but never really too scared. I love that place !!

I don’t know if they did for you , but I was given a voucher for a free checkup at fisherville vet and that was good. I didn’t feel like they were trying to sell me on anything and only offered suggestions.

Yes, a few recommended Pope Memorial! It’s sad to hear how many homes pets go through to find the right one. This guy, who I named Daryl 😂 is very timid and shy, but I’ve got a quiet place and I’m a homebody, so he can take all the time he needs to adjust. I also have a senior cat that’s 18! And she is just so chill. I think it’s a perfect fit :)

I don’t think I got a voucher, might have been a limited time thing, but I also haven’t looked through all of my paperwork yet.

Glad to hear it! We adopted Oscar and Jasper from the local humane society about this time last year, and adopted little Cora about a month ago. She is the SEVENTH cat we’ve adopted from the humane society since 1997 (Diamond, Wendecka, Xylophone, Anise, and now Oscar Jasper and Cora). They’ve all been generic domestic shorthairs, and have all been amazing, beautiful, unique, long-lived (18, 13, 18, 19 respectively - the new three are all still under two), healthy, incredible cats!

Having played the local mutt lottery seven times now - and won the jackpot each time - I can honestly say I would never get a cat anywhere else. Not any purebred or anything at all. So glad more folks are adopting from local places like this!

Okay … I would like to get a pair of bengals some day.

The Concord SPCA and the Dover Humane Society aren’t related. They’re not even affiliated with the same national organization. The only thing they have in common is that Lyman Pope donated large sums to both of them so they could build new facilities and then they changed their names to reflect that.

That's awesome. And I appreciate the tip; whenever I manage to move to a bigger house, I'd like to get the 3rd cat I planned for before the pandemic made adoptions so difficult.

Pope Memorial SPCA in Concord, but a poster here says they have a sister site in Dover

The Dover one has the same name because the same philanthropist gave them money to build the new shelters. They are separate organizations, though. Dover is still a humane society and Concord is under SPCA.

This doesn't mean you shouldn't go to Dover; it just means it's a whole separate organization so we can't assume it runs exactly like Concord. :-)

Good to know! Thanks for that info. I’m sure you’re right, it’s probably run very similar and they probably have just as many pets looking for forever homes 💕

My five are strays from my brief time living in the dirty South, but this makes me want to adopt MORE (obviously insane). Thanks for sharing!

Two of our cats and one of our dogs are from the Concord Pope Memorial SPCA. :-) Our oldest cat came from the old shelter in Pembroke. The new shelter is gorgeous! <3
