Edit: I am hugely embarrassed, I just did a recount and realised I missed one. Total is actually 90 films!
At the beginning of 2019 I made a resolution to see at least 30 new films in a cinema. I blasted past that and saw 52 films, also saw 52 in 2020. Unfortunately much more severe lockdowns in 2021 lead to only seeing 42 films, however I bounced back this year seeing 90 in total, 36 just at the NZ International Film Festival.
My favourites that I saw this year are:
- Playground
- All Quiet on the Western Front
- Triangle of Sadness
- Return to Seoul
- Marcel the Shell With Shoes On
- Spencer
- The Banshees of Inisherin
- White Noise
- Bodies Bodies Bodies
- Full Time
- The Innocents
- The Worst Person In the World
- Everything Everywhere All At Once
- The Menu
I think a few of these will be strong contenders for Oscars. Really hoping All Quiet can get a Best Picture nomination.
Honourable mentions to Top Gun Maverick, Smoking Causes Coughing, and Brahmāstra Part One: Shiva, which aren’t quite good enough to be at the top of my list, but undoubtedly are some of my favourite cinema experiences this year.
I don’t want to overload this post with text so in the comments I’ll leave a link to my Letterboxd list which has a full ranking of all the films I saw, and you can click through to the reviews to read my thoughts on each - (except Banshees, which I found so impactful I literally couldn’t put it into words).
How many films did you guys see in cinemas this year, and what are your top picks?
