There's a great movie to be made about Will Smith and that night at the Oscars.

Imagine a Darren Aronofsky film about that slap. A aging star with private issues under public scrutiny slaps the hosts of the Award show on the night he is about to win his biggest accolade.

Imagine the hour and half between the slap and him receiving the award. The relationship between the husband and wife, the other people on the table, the background workers scrambling to understand, the drama that they know he's going to win, the host trying to carry on, the inner hatred of a man that has marked his career forever, the family watching at home.

You could do a one take film where he is approached by different people all trying to limit the damage, understand, phone calls from agent s, other stars talking to him and I'm the middle of it all, his wife... The reason for the slap. The neglect, the smirk, the arrogance, the personality and the indifference.

I would watch it

I don't know about a 'great' movie, but I could see a trashy one being made, probably a made-for-TV movie or something more like it.

I don't think that'd be a good path to go down given a lot of people despise Smith for what he did and wouldn't sympathise with his 'introspection'. And it'd take a heck of a brave filmmaker to take up that perspective.

If you think of it like Boiling Point or The Whale it could be one long take as the will smith character deals with the high emotion of his actions on a night where he knows he's has done massive damage to him, his family, his career and his public persona all while the world is watching and waiting for the announcement of his award. Think of the craziness in his head, the frantic nature of that table and the people involved as they try to maintain dignity in face of the worst type of scrutiny. The people in the audience all slowly realising islt wasn't fake, all wondering why it happened and in the centre of it all is this one man...

It would actually make a terrific Law & Order episode, as they have tapped into many stories torn from the headlines along the way. And it would get publicity both positive and negative, and everyone would tune in, and the producers and writers would claim it is not based on any one event.

And yes, I would watch.

I think I would make a horror story out of it, like, that this happened in a society where each and every physical altercation is strongly forbidden and results in capital punishment. And it is to be executed as soon as Smith has left the venue and everyone around him including himself, knows that.

Edit: I mean, I kinda like the OPs' idea, but the stakes in that scenario aren't high enough for me to make it truly interesting.

I wouldn't make it exactly about the Will Smith thing, I'm not super into films about real event since they're almost always false and exploitative. I mean, he's still alive.

Maybe if they could pull it off like The Social Network, then sure. But I'd be much more interested in a movie BASED around this idea or inspired by such event. You can do a lot more with that without getting a lot of real life people involved with the event angry and it's probably less offensive.

Yes I agree. I did mean to base it around him, not on his story but as something that could be used as a framing device. I just can imagine his thoughts after he sits down and calms down, it must have been unbelievable

This is a great idea, based on this concept, it would be a fantastic film

The kind of camera work that makes you feel as though you're with the character living in the moment. The build up to the event, the psychological state of the character cracking until the event occurs, much like the film Mother

I still believe it happened to one of the biggest movie stars in the world, the whole event was surreal

This is a Sorkin procedural if I ever saw one. All the walk and talk scenes backstage leading up to the slap. Just like, but better than, his Steve Apple movie.

I was thinking a movie about an actor's decline as he joins a cult not unlike scientology that breaks him down slowly until an embarrassing rock bottom moment and jumps into obscurity. (think Requiem for a dream but what Scientology does to a person instead of hard drugs)

Or a movie about actors that pull off a hoax that inadvertently changes the entire world, either a harmless cherade done only to get them in the spotlight but instead spirals out of their control. (Like maybe in the style of the Deep Space 9 episode "In The Pale Moonlight")

Maybe I'm cynical but I am not even sure what happened with that other than a slap as I'm not into the Oscars or celebrity drama

I love how two people settled their differences and afterward there was no grudge, hostilities, shit talking, media propaganda campaign, or talks of lawsuits so people have to manufacture their own drama over it. like damn, a dude insulted a dude's wife and for once it was handled in a way everybody would have wanted to handle it if it had happened to them and we can't let that go.
