The fact that what is now New York was originally settled by the Dutch, and NOT the English.

Also there was that war between (then newly created English) New York and Vermont.

Even old New York was once New Amsterdam… it’s right there in the bridge to the song. Also, it’s the actual reason… the Dutch owned that area by charter until they didn’t. I think some of Vermont too?

All I know is, I can tell when I pass from New England to New York by the change in aesthetics of the roads and the towns. New England is quainter.

New York smells like cow.

The Quebecois word for this always made cow poop smell far more appealing, phonetically. Silage. J’adore le silage á New York.

buddaycousin t1_j51xsr2 wrote

Funny, in English "silage" is grass that has been fermented. Cows love the stuff.

[deleted] t1_j51xw2w wrote

Yep. I suspect it looks much the same on both ends of the digestive journey 🤣

1

SeasonalBlackout t1_j51uf6x wrote

After smelling silage and building word association it becomes a lot less appealing quickly!

I will add that central/Western New York does have a New England feel to it, especially around Buffalo in their suburbs.

Because it was controlled by the Dutch, not English. Same reason Louisiana has all those French names for towns and streets. Because it was controlled by the French.

TheDeadlySpaceman t1_j51lcvq wrote

Louisiana also has “Parishes” instead of counties and a bunch of other napoleonic law bs

New York and New England are also geographically-divided, by the Berkshire Mountains and the Taconic Mountains, both of which are part of the Appalachians, which means the mountains are primarily oriented north-south and have only a few valleys joining the different ridges, which makes travel difficult. Cumberland Gap became famous for a reason

IKnowYouTried t1_j50q63b wrote

My guess is the Hudson River valley historically was a pretty substantial geographical barrier. It pretty much follows the Western edge of New England.

HeyaShinyObject t1_j51f5ew wrote

Early on (pre revolution), Connecticut extended to the Hudson. There was some treaty that brought the line east to where it is now.

I’m no historian, but I wonder if it’s the Dutch. The New England states were English colonies to a large extent, while New York was originally New Amsterdam. Were the differences cultural rather than geographic?

14

Royal_Purple1988 t1_j50170v wrote

Yes, it was before statehood. You had the New England Colony, Middle Colony, and Southern Colony. The middle colonies included NY because New York was Dutch and below the New England Colonies. Geography played a part in the boundaries. Upstate NY wasn't really part of the equation as the settlements began along the coast.

Massachusetts was stronger than the Yorkers. We kicked the British out of here faster than York could only imagine. To this day people of Mass can’t stand NY.

6

downwardspiralstairs t1_j4zrwdk wrote

Because it was called New Netherland and it's capital was called New Amsterdam which was on the southern tip of Manhattan Island. The settlement was originally started by the Dutch West India Company to profit from the fur trade.

7

MayaIngenue t1_j50lk11 wrote

Never forget that the original western border for Mass. was supposed to be the Pacific ocean

chomerics t1_j50p53f wrote

The Hudson River?

New Amsterdam was a Dutch settlement, New England was settled by England is the real reason though.

New England in the 1680s was an incorporated colonial dominion under British imperial rule that had its own distinct legal system and geographic definition. The other notable British imperial dominion in North America appeared in the late 19th century and ended up being its own country a few years later. That dominion is some little place called “Canada.”

A couple huge lakes, some mountains, and the Hudson. The divide between MA/VT and NY are natural.

Istarien t1_j51ke0w wrote

I grew up in Western NY and now live in MA, and no. They are not the same. If, by "upstate," you mean the capital district, that might be a different thing. I haven't spent enough time in Albany's immediate environs to know what it's like.

learnandknow t1_j506owo wrote

The current NE states shielded NY from whatever, so NE states are NE states and no other state gets to share that title. ;-)

Jakius t1_j51pivr wrote

Don't forget the effect of water on community economy. New England developed on coastal trade and the Connecticut River. New York developed on the Hudson River and the Great lakes trade. Vermont is a bit odd but it's trade mostly goes down south to the Connecticut River still.

802grrl t1_j5396ir wrote

Speaking for Vermont, we had protracted land disputes with NY that caused VT to be its own First Republic independent from the US for about nine years, with our own constitution, currency, and governance - then it went all downhill. 🤪 Made us very grumpy and cantankerous. That's why VT is not an original 13 colony because a bunch of money grubbing Yankees wanted money for native lands that were never theirs. And probably added to the drift between upstate NYS and VT/NE.

CRoss1999 t1_j5bkbyt wrote

See I used to think of upstate New York as part of New England so I’m not certain, maybe because New York was Dutch,
