I grew up deer hunting in another state. in my state most hunting was done using rifle.
1 why doesn't mass offer a rifle season?
2 what type of ammunition is allowed during shotgun season? I can't imagine it's legal to shoot a deer from 50 yds away with buck shot. I don't think that would be a lethal, ethical situation. I couldn't find an obvious answer but I would assume only slug is allowed? if so why don't they make that more obvious?

They make Deer slugs for shotgun hunting. The reason rifles are not allowed is if you miss the round can go a lot further then a slug or black powered projectile.
