Rentals that include an in-law suite?

I’m looking to potentially move into a rental for a couple years with an aging parent and was wondering if houses ever go for rent that have a primary living area and an In-law suite? I’m having a very hard time even finding one. Could be anywhere east of Worcester. With our aging population, you would think these kinds of living arrangements would be more common, and I can find such things for sale, but not for rent…

There are some houses with in-laws; of course finding one for rent is few and far between. One of (maybe the) nation's largest home builder, Lennar, they don't build in MA, but in 26 other states, and one of their most popular models is an in-law, with a separate kitchen, garage, everything; My parents live next to one, it's perfect for in-laws. Just mentioning it in case your move ends up being out of state, that's an easy way to find what you are looking for.

Opinion:

If cohabitation (with more bedrooms) is not something you can imagine, then you're either looking to buy or rent more than one place.

Opinion:

I think it would be ideal, but as others have pointed out, realistically, it usually is not an option either due to limited physical availability or financial availability.

They're around but there either rented as separate units or the owner lives there and rents out the other part. You'll have to buy to find what you are looking for or rent two apartments in the same building.

It doesn't exist. You'll need to:

  • Buy
  • Share a 2-3 bedroom
  • Rent 2 apartments in the same facility
  • Move out of state

East of Worcester will be tough… they would likely charge you extra for that. My advice, look west of Worcester or New Hampshire.

I think I have said that or implied that, twice now.

Realistically, you are more likely to either rent a larger place with more rooms (cohabitate), rent more than one place, or buy. Most people who look to do this, end up buying, and either dividing up a house or extending onto it, or possibly having a smaller guest house.

It comes down to physical availability or financial availability.
