Hi, I found an apartment I really like in Hamilton Park. It’s within my budget and in the downtown area. I can’t really find any “negatives” about the apartment. I am curious about the distance to a few of the bars/restaurants near the water. Seems like it’s about a 15 min walk. Honestly I don’t think anything closer to the water is in my budget. I know I’m rambling but I guess my question is, do you think this is still a good area to be living in as a single person looking to socialize? Thank you!!!

I live in that area and while it is quiet and more families it is an easy enough walk to get to restaurants/bars, transportation and grocery stores. If the price is right and youre not trying to socialize every night of the week then i think you would be fine in that area!

Thank you :) Monday to Friday I really won't be around much bc I work my main job and then a second job after work a few nights a week. I just want to be able to go out on weekends if I want.

It's a nice neighborhood and there are handful of bars or whatever nearby. But by and large Jersey City is nothing near what Hoboken is. And the problem with Hamilton Park is it's a bit of walk to the PATH at either Grove Street or Newport so it's not especially easy to get to Manhattan either. If you're okay walking 15 minutes to downtown JC you'll find a few places that are good. Down by the waterfront and in Paulus Hook there's a few bars there like Taqueria and Zeppelin Hall down at Liberty Harbor that are good spots but that's a good walk, possibly an Uber from Hamilton Park. There's also some rooftops along the Hudson but again that's a hike. If you're dead set on Hamilton Park I guess you could walk through the mall and hit the light rail to Hoboken (sort of a weird walk back at night though) and that's still maybe 15 minutes.

For reference I lived in Paulus Hook down by the marina which is a wonderful neighborhood, but the light rail goes right through the middle of the neighborhood so it was easy to get places and Grove Street PATH was only a five minute walk. Even though the Paulus Hook bars aren't exactly raging and close often before midnight the ease of being able to get either to Manhattan or Hoboken made it worth it. I could be in the heart of the village in 15 minutes because I was so close to the PATH. And price wise it's not really any more expensive than Hamilton Park area at the low end at least, and a lot quieter.

Its actually a pretty easy commute to the city in my experience. From the park to Newport path is a 12 min walk. I commuted daily for years to the city and it was so easy. The area is more of a quiet area at night. There are several restaurants and food spots within 5 mins distance and Key foods market is 7mins away. If you want the nightlife thats over by the Grove path its like 12-15 mins walking distance which is not that bad considering you’re living right by a park with dog runs, basketball and tennis courts.

lived in hamilton park since my mid 20s and adore it, been here 7 years. close to downtown, good cafes… plenty of options close by for tame nights and more typical bars are like 10 min walk.

Ed and Mary’s is right there, and Hamilton Pork and Rumba Cubano. It’s also a close walk to Newark Ave for Barcade, Pet Shop, etc.

You're in the nicest neighborhood in town, and close to basically everything. The epicenter of nightlife in JC is Grove & Columbus; wherever you are near Hamilton Park, you're a short walk from there, which means you have easy access without the traffic or noise. Take that apartment and don't let it go!

Uff. Hamilton Park (and, Paulus Hook for that matter) strike me as a much better fit for young families, or people already in a relationship. Also, no that many restaurants or bars near the water that you will want to frequent all that often. Ondo is incredible, Domo Domo is really good, Lokal is good, and so is the place across from it. But, honestly, that's it. Nothing else that way.

Thanks for this input I appreciate it. I'm not the type that's like out every night/every weekend. I just want the option to go somewhere if I'd like to.

It's a fine walk to pretty much anywhere you'd want to go.

I totally agree, and it's such a nice place to live. I have a lot of single friends who live over there and they love it.

I live in Hamilton Park and it’s great. Takes me 15 minutes to walk to the PATH. It’s about a 10 minute walk to all the bars downtown. And it’s about a 10 minute Uber to Hoboken. Personally, I love it here.

I’ve lived in Hamilton Park for 10 yrs and can confirm it’s not great for singles. This neighborhood is predominantly young families or people who are already coupled up. However I like my apartment and the physical neighborhood itself in terms of quality. In terms of going out, downtown by Grove Street or a trip to NYC or Hoboken via the Path are the best options.

I would add that the "social" scene in DTJC isn't really by the water. While there are perhaps a few exceptions, Newark Avenue, Grove Street, etc. are going to be where the action is.

Definitely a lot of families there and few singletons. Hoboken may be more your speed for a more amped up social life.

Yes! I lived in Hamilton park for over 10 years after college and loved it! It’s a bit far from grove st but it’s safe and there are always people walking their dogs by the park

Hamilton park is the best neighborhood in downtown, in my opinion. It's walking distance to all the restaurants, nightlife (which has gone way downhill around the pedestrian plaza thanks to places like the Ashford) yes, but it's also surrounded by some of the best restaurants in the area. White star, Chickies, Hamilton pork. And they're tucked away to keep the general Newark Ave crowd at an arms length. Not to mention all the gorgeous brownstones, nice little shops, and the park itself.

It'd be silly to miss out on such a gem of a neighborhood in fear of missing out on the dwindling quality of the pedestrian plaza 's offerings

Become a regular at a neighborhood spot - Ed and Mary's or white star, and walk the half mile to Newark Ave when you feel like something more exciting. Not that serious. Is it more residential than literally on Grove Street? Sure but it's not the suburbs. Better to be near a park, in my opinion, especially when you're walking distance to bars anyway.

Close to the water is not any closer to Newark Ave, so not sure why that's relevant.

It depends on what kind of socializing you want to do. Honestly, I’m not a huge ‘going out’ person and when I do it’s often with people I know (some being relatively young, single people though). I’ve also lived in Hoboken.

There are so many more places in Hoboken, but I would definitely argue it’s a different scene than downtown Jersey City. It’s not like you are going to walk down Newark Ave on a thurs-sat night and the bars are empty. Also a fair amount of music and such.

Also, I’d probably take the PIA commute into the city over going to Hoboken any day of the week. The ‘Hamilton Park’ part of that commute is nothing compared to the PATH part. At least the walk to Grove can be consistent.

If you can’t walk a more than 3 blocks to downtown, then yeah… it will be boring

Can always walk to grove path and take to exchange to get to places near waterfront in situations where it’s too damn cold or hot to wanna be walking 15+ mins
