World Boxing Gym is relatively cheap and they let my wife cancel with no hassle at all.

It looks awesome but it’s 3x the price of Blink and like 6x the price of PF so that’s a bummer.

LA Fitness is rumored to open any day in Bayonne according to my family. They might have a pool ... so I might consider joining then.

I would overpay if they have a pool. LA Fitness knows that’s a weakness a lot of us crave 😭

Honestly, I can swim for hours(and have)....and it’s so good for you without putting too much strain on your body.

Hudson County really needs more public/private pools.

For whatever reason that location redirects you if you try and sign up for the cheaper plans? Like why would I pay for the green plan and access to hundreds of gyms? I barely convince myself to go to the one in my own neighborhood you know? I’m gonna call them though maybe they’ll explain the issue.

Ah gotcha. I’m gonna sign up for PF soon though. I think the one on 440 is finally open

Just have it billed to a credit card so you can always cancel through the bank instead of dealing with PF BS

Someone just told me that you can use a prepaid card to sign up and then it’s easier to cancel because you’ve made it clear there’s no way to get more money out of you. Might have to try that.

I would 2nd Blink. I used to be a member there (twice). And both times I was on the cheaper plan. But I signed up in person. No idea, if they changed things or you just have to do it in person. I eventually cancelled (for the 2nd time), so obviously there were reasons it didn't work out for me, but for what you want, this sounds like the way to go. As for World Boxing Gym, your instincts are correct. It's too expensive for what it is and what you want. I would never travel to go there. It's only worth it, if you're paying for convenience...aka you live a quick walk away from it.

Blink journal square is so packed nowadays I would suggest everyone to stay away unless it’s your only option

Haven't been so I can't vouch, but I've got the same gym attitude and car situation. Been considering Retro Fitness on Garfield AVe. in Bayonne. It's just on the city line with a big parking lot, so seems easy enough to get to.

Ooh I wonder if it’s 24hrs. I’ll have to look because that’s a huge bonus for me.

Have you tried https://www.heightsfitnessjc.com/ ?

Also FWIW, I stopped going to a real gym entirely during covid and learned calisthenics through YouTube and found that to be a great alternative. You can do a full body workout with little to no equipment whenever you want from home. Good Luck with your fitness journey!

Heights fitness definitely checks the affordable box. No contracts. you can buy 3 months up front for like ~40 a month. It’s pretty casual too. The only thing is it’s not big so it gets packed pretty quick in peak hours.

I use retro $20-30/month. Some of the memberships are month to month, I believe.

My experience was very different (was a member at Hoboken's PF for years). Cancellation was straightforward. May I ask where you were charged? (Want to avoid it!)

In terms of local places, Club Metro is about $50/month, though you'll pay an annual fee and some other nickel-and-dime BS. The gym has some wear-and-tear, but you'll find everything you need and more (it's huge).

The problem was my original gym was Linden, but after I moved to Louisiana for grad school I had my home gym transferred there (this took literally five phone calls to NJ and over an hour in the Baton Rouge gym just to get it transferred). I returned to NJ for lockdown when campus closed, and PF alerted us dues were being suspended. When they opened again I was not comfortable going back so soon and asked to cancel if they wouldn’t let me stay in stasis. They said I had to cancel in person despite being 1300 miles away during a pandemic. I sent emails, I called, then they moved my home gym back to Linden without asking. Linden was confused and kept saying I had to go to Baton Rouge to cancel. At some point while changing banks they missed a single payment and then refused to let me even request the form without paying the $25 plus a $10 late fee. It was nothing but nightmares for literally three years until I closed my bank account. It’s hard to deny the $10 membership it’s just so many horror stories about leaving I’ll never use my regular account again. If I do sign up (it’s looking likely), I’ll do so with a prepaid card to avoid the drama again.
