Cameras are the only way this shit ends. I know red light cameras are technically illegal in NJ (which is ludicrous), but maybe pedestrian light cameras aren't. Time for the City to try something new.

Never trust cars in JC. Who knows who is behind the wheel.

One car on an empty road was driving at less than 10 mph. Too slow and was far. I wait for a while but then decided to cross since there was a stop sign. And the cars speeds up towards me.

The other time my Lyft driver was watching videos while driving on his phone

Once again crying about it on Reddit does nothing. Stop voting for mayors that don’t care if the PD does anything in a given day. When the mayor and the PD announce the success of Vision Zero bombard their Twitter with #bullshit. Make sure you council people know that vision zero is bullshit propaganda and we are just getting better at getting out of the way of assholes.

The legislation that allowed red light cameras on a test basis was rescinded (or, perhaps more accurately, allowed to sunset) because (as feared by many) some towns couldn't resist the corruption urge and started messing with the timing of yellow lights to shorten it. Once it was shown/proved that some intersections where the cameras were deployed had their yellow light duration shortened (in violation of mandated standards) the state did away with the red light camera test. So, if you are upset about the current state of things wrt red light cameras, blame the corrupt politicians that tried to squeeze more money out of people.

I still want a snitch program for bad drivers here. In NYC if a truck idles for more than 5 minutes and you record it the city fines them $350 and you get $87.50. We as civilians should have the ability to send in body cam/phone/dash cam footage and get people fined. If every pedestrian, cyclist and car could be fining you traffic would get better, especially if we have a monetary incentive to snitch on reckless drivers.

If I put a webcam on my balcony with high enough resolution I could probably pay my rent if we could get a $50 kick back for each traffic violation.

Anyone who cares more about the PD is also likely to not care at all about pedestrian safety based on their likely further right wing positioning. Unfortunately that's how it is these days. Who is a realistic mayor option that would be better?

Right on red started in the 70s during a gas crisis - allegedly to keep from people burning extra gas while waiting for lights. It was supposed to be a full stop with no traffic or pedestrians in sight, but you know how that went. It should have been abolished ago because people behave like idiots.

Never trust any care no matter where you are. People are to trusting and assume everyone is paying attention while driving. Humans are operating 2000 -5000 lbs vehicles that can kill or seriously injure a person, but people will senselessly cross the street without looking because they believe or have hope the driver will stop 😂🤣😂 what kind of entitled world do you live in? I look both ways before crossing and will look again while crossing to make sure the person has intentions of stopping or slowing down.

I've worked as a first responder for over a decade, and I've seen plenty of people who've been struct my moving vehicles because they thought the person was paying attention. It's happened so much that it's become comical. The pedestrian must be just as accountable as the driver when crossing intersections. it's not a one-way street. The worst place I see this is Hoboken 😂 people walk out blindly with no regard for their safety 😂🤣😂! It's the funniest thing to see them startled and upset when cars don't stop for them😂🤣😂! Anyway, pay attention, and you won't get hit by a car that doesn't see you. Trust yourself, not the person driving if you want to live.

Jersey city police have serious crimes to deal with, not small-town nonsense complaints. Look both ways before you cross, pay attention, and survive the city like the rest of us. 🤦🏻‍♂️ It's the city, not the suburbs.

Technically there can be pedestrians anywhere, even in the middle of the highway. I think there should be no right on red in areas beyond a certain density, which includes jc. It should be allowed elsewhere.

1

BenevolentCheese t1_jedjlj5 wrote

How many fucking cops do you think there are? You want a cop at every single light that allows right on red? It's impossible. There are significantly moreover important and dangerous traffic infractions and even those who can't be enforced. Just disallow it.

My wife was crossing by JC Tattoo at that intersection by Newark Ave WITH OUR CHILD in a stroller and some asshole just barely stopped short of hitting them. She glared at him and he got out and threatened her, saying he'd run her over and fuck this, fuck that, blah bullshit blah. Mind you, she is literally crossing at a crosswalk at a busy intersection with lots of pedestrians and stop lights. The lady at the Tattoo shop saw the whole thing and she came out and admonished the guy, and then he started threatening her. Total fucking psycho asshole.

I myself have almost been run over several times, especially at Newport by the fire station on Marin and on Erie by 10th street where traffic heads up to the tunnel. Once I was crossing and some dude literally buzzed right in front of me, like inches. Then he had the nerve to honk at me. I yelled fuck you, the guy literally stops in traffic to yell fuck you back, holding up everyone else. But he couldn't wait the 10 seconds before that for me to safely cross. I was so pissed I ran after his car shouting obscenities until he sped off into tunnel traffic.

Buncha savages in this town.

Totally. Sad because I love all my Hamilton Park neighbors and Heights homies. But in my 15 years in JC, the traffic has always been shitr throughout Hudson County and has gotten way worse in Downtown specifically with the development that has progressed.

My wife is Queens born and raised and I've had to tell her to watch herself with shitty driving here in Jersey. Drivers in NYC are way more understanding of pedestrian traffic.

aa043 t1_jef0b3x wrote

NYC has an existing system, you can't run a red light at many intersections without getting a ticket. Overall compliance everywhere improves as culprits change habits or lose permits.

In NJ too many traffic violations are observed every day in addition to running stop signs and red lights. There is frequent crossing of solid lines, many without signalling. (Some vehicles, including trucks and Amazon delivery vans, take short cuts cutting through a Pulaski exit lane which has solid lines on both sides). Accidents on and near Pulaski show up on google maps all the time. Cameras could reduce accidents and big trucks on Pulaski would soon vanish.

aa043 t1_jefbew0 wrote

"JCPD does not enforce anything." is a poor statement and obviously false.

You should not spread false statements. I have lived in JC long enough.

zjuka t1_jefzrd7 wrote

Yep, can relate. Sometimes I wonder if I’m invisible or something. Even with visibility corners (or whatever that is called), a pedestrian is expected to look for the car approaching, instead of other way around.

Most annoying is when the driver is looking for upcoming vehicles when turning and completely ignores pedestrians crossing the road
