Grove St vs The Heights

Im looking to move to JC from Hoboken soon and I’m deciding between two neighborhoods, Grove St/Hamilton Park and The Heights(Near the Hoboken border on Franklin St). Anyone live in these neighborhoods and want to share what they like and don’t like about them?

Im a mid-20s guy that commutes occasionally to the office in Hudson Yards so commute isn’t a big deal. Im looking for an area that offers lots to do such as classes, gyms and parks. My budget is $3200 for a two bedroom.

Sure you want to leave Hoboken just yet? Much more happening where you are. Heights is a little removed from transit and urban night life but otherwise a great choice. If you’re looking for urban but less noisy than lower Hoboken then grove street area is the way to go. Lots of new inventory though $3200 for a 2 bed seems aggressive now.

Been living in Hoboken for awhile now and got bored of it. I never really ventured out into JC which is why Im considering it. How’s the nightlife in the Heights compared to Grove St? Im looking for spots similar to Mulligans in Hoboken

That type of nightlife doesn’t exist in the Heights. You’re better off downtown between the two, but still a very different environment than Hoboken. I would suggest coming out and exploring downtown JC a couple weekends. Jersey City is much more diverse than Hoboken. You’ll find all kinds of age groups, ethnicities, income levels, education levels etc hanging out in the same establishments. The nightlife is also very inconsistent. One Friday can be packed and the next it could be dead and closed by 12am. The Ashford is the only place consistently busy with nightlife, but isn’t well received by a lot of locals since it tends to bring in a louder drunken nightlife.

If your budget is $3200 a month and you care about the night life and not being bored, move to NYC

Something of note here is that living in NYC would mean also paying the 4% city tax on income. $3200/month in Jersey City is therefore a little more affordable than $3200/month in NYC proper. Still, I agree with your point about cultural differences between Jersey and NYC.

You can get to the heights or grove Street as quickly as you can get from one side of Hoboken to the other so why not just check the areas out? Maybe you're bored in Hoboken because it's a small city and you would be less inclined to leave if you explored more of the greater area?

Separately, $3200 for a two bedroom near Grove will be tough. You're definitely in walk up territory but there won't be many. Will be more availability in the heights.

There's about 15 in all of downtown according to Zillow. Depending on how close to Grove he wants to be, that list is smaller. There are literally close to a hundred in the heights.

I said it was possible but tough near Grove ("in walk up territory" but "won't be many") and easier ("more availability") in the heights. That's a true statement.

The reaches people go to to correct people on this app is bizarre.

Grove st/Hamilton park shouldn’t really be paired like that. HP very accessible from the commercial part of downtown but it’s a quiet neighborhood with lots of families. Compared to grove st at least your have better chance of getting more for your buck in HP. Also the park and there’s a low budg gym.

Just moved from the Heights myself to JSQ.

Heights is still a diverse, family-oriented neighborhood with little pockets of things to do here and there. It is a relatively quiet neighborhood. Like mentioned before, there is no nightlife. You’ll be going into Hoboken or Grove St for things to do. As for transit, you’ll mostly be locked taking the bus to PA. It’s an easy 15-20 minutes, if the bus shows up when it’s supposed to. Weekend coverage is a abysmal. You can find a two bedroom in your price range here.

If you’re looking for lots to do and easy access to the city, Grove St is the way to go. Though, you’re unlikely to find anything for a two bedroom in that price range. You could expand your search to JSQ or Bergen-Lafayette, which are good neighborhoods closer to Grove St and public transit than the Heights. They will have more options in your price range.

I'd probably do Paulus Hook, Liberty Harbor or Downtown before the heights or Hamilton Park. For starters your closer to transit. The ferry, light rail and Path are all right there. Also there's more of a youthful scene especially around liberty harbor down where Grove Street ends. Paulus Hook is nice but quiet but the light rail and ferry make it convenient.

That being said $3200 for a 2br is a tough ask in Jersey City at least in any of the newer developments. I mean the studios in my building are starting at that. You'd probably more realistically be looking at the newer developments in Bayonne or possibly up in Weehawken or West New York or Guttenberg which might be better for a Hudson Yards commute anyway.

Grove st is the right neighborhood based on what you want, but not at that price. $3200 for a nice 1 BR on the other hand…

I live in the Heights and also work at Hudson Yards. I take the 119 or 123 bus to Port Authority and walk. It takes maybe 40 minutes total if the bus comes as scheduled. Occasionally I’ll take the light rail to the Path, but that takes more time.

I really like the heights. It’s decently quiet, but there are places to get food, parks, and it’s extremely close to downtown and Hoboken if you have a bike or car.
