Find my iPhone can remotely wipe it.

True, but only once it is online, right? Someone that acquires the phone and guesses the passcode could access data offline.
Or does the Find My network communicate remote wipes? That would be neat, but my understanding is no.

If you try to wipe the phone and it’s off it will erase the next time it gets a connection

Right, so, no data protection from someone who fixes the phone and guesses the 0000 PIN.
Sorry OP, but you trash the phone, don’t sell for parts.

No one buying the phone on eBay is interested in the data inside, and no one would think to start guessing passwords.
People on eBay are fixing them and selling them on for the £50 they can make on it, and that’s it.

You’re quite likely correct. But if it were my phone, I wouldn’t risk my data being compromised.

That’s understandable. If I was in OPs shoes I’d go to another store and ask them to put another battery on the phone, just to see if the thing even works.
