You can buy the connectors online

From one seller and it's like $20 a connector. I usually spend less on an entire Paracord than I would on that one connector.

AliExpress
huffalump1 t1_ja9b3rh wrote
At that point it's cheaper to buy the lowest price cable and cut them, oof.
NothingMuch12 t1_jabbfv7 wrote
I got the hd600 and hd800 connectors for around $6 on taobao. I can't really read Chinese well but Google translate was sufficient to get me through checkout and shipping
SoundDrill t1_jabh0jo wrote
And that paracord looks super cool too on your custom cables
blorg t1_jabmaap wrote
I got an entire cable for $7 here in Asia. Same cable is $15 on Amazon, and is a decent cable with 2 connectors already attached.
The HD6X0 connector is technically proprietary but it's very easy to get and it's cheaper even than supposedly non-proprietary connectors like Audeze's mini-XLR, or Audio-Technica's recessed 2.5mm. It's only marginally more difficult to get than dual 3.5mm.
StanGenchev t1_ja8on93 wrote
As a Sennheiser HD 800 owner, fuck the custom Lemo connector.
Same goes for the Hirose connector on the Dan Clark Audio Expanse.
Both could've just used a simple 3.5 mm jack.
Compgeak t1_ja8surt wrote
Wait the LEMOs aren't standard, Sennheiser got LEMO to make a special version just for them? That's retarded, wtf??? You can at least buy a normal one even if it's expensive, why go custom.
QuatreMyr t1_ja8wmko wrote
They aren't custom LEMO, I don't know why people keep saying that, they're ODU Mini-Snap.
StanGenchev t1_ja8zhc9 wrote
I don't know if LEMO makes the HD 800 connectors or if Sennheiser makes it themselves but it's custom. I searched for the model number on LEMOs website and none of the connectors fit the one on the HD 800. The FGG.0B.302 is really close but it's not exactly the same. Every compatible connector is HD 800-specific and it costs a ton compared to standard 3.5 mm or miniXLR. AliExpress has some knock-offs but the fit is quite bad. I guess they did it so people will have to buy their cable, which is also quite expensive BTW.
ArkhamKnight0708 t1_ja9si8m wrote
I love the Hirose connector but it sucks that it's proprietary. At least it's easy to buy for an ok price
xyvyx t1_jab76sx wrote
I dunno... I kinda like the Dan Clark connectors... well designed, locks into place w/ a positive "click". Way better than the crap on my past Sennheisers!
exdigguser147 t1_ja8t6h6 wrote
Why would I want a non-locking connector on the removable cable? that sounds awful. The plugs direct from DCA only cost $7 each...
Degru t1_ja8vtdl wrote
3.5 stays in fine for me. That'd have to be a really heavy cable for it to have problems staying in. And it is less likely to break if yanked.
Minusfourtwenty t1_ja903d6 wrote
I've had issues on older equipment where the bearings go bad in the aux port, but it's a rare problem
IANVS t1_jaa5olu wrote
If the cable gets caught on something, I would rather have the cable to disconnect than to have headphones yanked from my head and fall down or smash into something.
BobTheMenace t1_ja8s4sd wrote
Seriously. The biggest reason I ended up buying the Philips X2HR as my first good headphones was because I saw they use a regular 3.5mm cable.
SweetNapalm t1_jaa1xcs wrote

...My pain when upgrading to the x3
quigley0 t1_jabtevp wrote
I work from home and wear my X2HRs for like 10 hours a day (work + gaming). They were my replacement for the X1's, which i wore daily for years (X1s still work great, the pad is at its end of life after 10,000 hours of wear.)
Needless to say....i am a fan of the fidelio's :-)
BotdogX t1_jac2w0x wrote
Totally. Switched to AKG 712s when my X2s broke, ordered a custom XLR to 3.5mm for my boompro mic... Then the adapter broke and I found a pair of X2HR on sale for half price 😄
Un111KnoWn t1_ja8rw62 wrote
Does custom connector include those dumb locking mechanisms for connectors that still use 3.5mm?
iAmJustASmurf t1_ja9vsg3 wrote
especially since there are standardized locking 3.5mm connectors. The only manufacturer I can think of that uses them is Sony though (MDR-Z1R and MDR-Z7)
benfires t1_jaap5le wrote
Fostex says hello, or at least their RP lineup does.
Thankfully i got my mk3 second hand and way past warranty so i just modded it to take MMCX balanced. Was having so much trouble with the locking 3.5mm

It's the same as $100k trucks. As long as people buy it, it'll be made.

I am just here to complain about my UE custom connectors.
The original cables died so now I am stuck with the Bluetooth and I can't afford the $200 replacement cables.
BerrieSK t1_ja98xxz wrote
My first cable died from sweat or some type of twisting at the connection to the left IEM. Took me a while to pull the trigger but I got the black $200 one. I honestly don't think its going to break. Its a shame the first cable they give us is so bad cause I love the sound of my UE11s
10011110 t1_ja9b7tc wrote
Mine did the same thing. In retrospect I could have completely prevented it by putting a small amount of shrink wrap right where the braided cables met the ear connectors.
The worst part is the Bluetooth unit they give us has background noise. 😠The sound quality I was getting with my FIIO's was amazing.
Edit: To add a little salt, I already had to have my UE CIEMs sent in for repair because the center pin of their connector got pushed in. That already cost me $200+
Soo $400+ out of pocket just because their connectors suck?? Omg hell no.
BerrieSK t1_ja9zcdz wrote
Yea the bluetooth thing sucks. For a company that praises their connectors its quite funny that they suck so much
CaptainPirated t1_jab38py wrote
Shrink wrap.....Good idea lol I'll look into it...time to mod !
10011110 t1_jab9qgo wrote
Yeah the tubes you use to cover solder joints.
It's cheap and pretty thick, useful af. Just google "shrink wire wrap" and pick your flavor. Just wish I had before killing my cables. 😂
CaptainPirated t1_jabnv69 wrote
I plan on covering my whole wire in that 😂

Or: Someone who purchases well-built, reasonably-priced HP, interconnects, and USB cables - but spends money on several of them of different layouts and materials, so that he can experiment to see if he can actually hear slight differences (ie: me, LOL, and yes). Plus, he's got fall-back cables if one or two ever breaks. He also refuses to buy HPs that need special connectors as a pet peeve....
