For context: I have a limited time to practice my gaming hobby and I want to delve in a good story-oriented game. Now, I've played Skyrim before and although I know TES has decent lore, is Skyrim itself worth spending time on for story alone? While I do like AAA presentation of the story, I can overlook it if Skyrim has a story that is interesting.

The main story? No. If you are getting a version that can support mods then there are some great quest mods out there.

No. The story is stupid. Dragons are coming back. There's a really big one. You kill him twice. The end.

It's a lot more fun to make your own story as you play.

No, it is very average and forgettable.

And very short

I'm sure you're being sarcastic here. It definitely is not a short game and you can get your money's worth for sure. But the vanilla game is terrible as a roleplaying and storytelling experience. And they relied too much on radiant questing at the expense of unique quest lines which is reflected in the lower number of quests relative to previous TES games and shorter guild storylines.

The main storyline IS short. Skyrim in total is fairly large, simply due to the insane amount of side quests (which aren't relevant to the main story, though)

The main story, and that was the question about, is fairly short. Even for a first time player its probably under 10 hours. Ofc Skyrim is a large game with tons of side quests but that wasnt the question.

If you want story then play Mass effect legendary edition. Best story game ever made.

Mass Effect is already my favorite game of all time and I did a new playthrough this september. Kinda early to do it again. Nice to meet a fellow fan, though. Cheers!

That reminds me that I still have the ME box set in the original packaging for console lol! I should prob play that one of these days. However, I've got hundreds of hours on skyrim and haven't started any of the main missions other than the intro stuff. If you're on pc I would recommend the edition that allows you to mod. If you're interested i can check which version i have.

Dragon Age may be a good one to try, if you liked Mass Effect. Not exactly same type, but it's from Bioware, same as ME.

Skyrim has a story? I thought it was just spending hours picking out mods, more hours making sure they installed correctly, going to Bleak Falls Barrow, and uninstalling after you realize the game and mods take up too much hard drive space.

No it is not. Main story is very very bad. I wouldnt put my name on it if I were creator.

Whole story:

SPOILER!!!

Hey, there are dragons who wants to kill us. Ok, looks like I am dragon killer now. So I will kill dragons and their boss undead dragon. The End.

To be honest, if you want story, you should play Morrowind or Oblivion. I admit that my first Elder Scrolls game was Oblivion, and it is one of my favorites of all time because of story and gameplay. Like, I just started playing it again this week with a magic character, which I had never done before, and it has opened up a whole new world to me. Morrowind still has the better story, but it took a lot for me to understand it when I started playing last week after trying a couple years ago and not getting it (everything is chance based on your skill and attributes, which is different from the hack and slash I am used to in later games). If you want to get into Skyrim, you are doing so for the gameplay, world, and aesthetics. I personally am not a fan of the darker, more naturalistic art direction and prefer the fantasy feel of Oblivion much better.

TLDR: Skyrim is the best for modern hack and slash, but has poor story (and every quest line in my opinion) in comparison to the last two major entries in the series. I also preferred Morrowind’s skill prerequisites for ranking up in factions as well as the huge number of factions available.

Skyrim isn't worth anything if your not gonna mod/finish the game for the devs. It's story sucks it's gameplay sucks it's buggy and horribly unpolished, it's a chore to do anything.

Skyrim is about freedom of play, altho the story is not terrible.

If you just want to enjoy the story try some edited YouTube videos. Plenty of games have those, like a fan made movie.

If you want RPG with heavy focus on story then check CRPG. They tend to be slower, have tons of dialogs, etc. You will spend more time reading, making story decisions, etc, then killing things. Some JRPG are also great on narrative.

Or pick a game around an IP you are interested on. Like Witcher 3 (maybe you read the books, or watched the TV show, etc). That way you can combine the game story with the other media for a more completed package.
