Post title is poor as most of this list aren't social media apps. The title for the chart is better, as data is actually for:

>The list includes social networks, as well as online forums, photo and video sharing platforms, messaging and VoIP apps

And the Wiki page that's the source for the data separates out 'integrated services' such as iMessage, which would be in the top 5 in this chart.

In some African countries Facebook provides free internet, but only for Facebook and a selected few websites.

For these people Facebook is synonymous with internet

Haven’t had Facebook in 6 months. Don’t miss it. Millennial Facebook is so weird. We were just old enough to have one when it started. We added a thousand people from high school and college and then never shared a thing on it again lol

If Twitter is worth so much with so little, imagine how much Facebook might be worth!

Google built its empire by being the starting point of the internet for a generation of people. Facebook has replaced that for a billion low-income people who experience the internet entirely through cheap Android phones, and rakes in the ad revenue accordingly. Facebook is the internet for these folks.

I still do not understand why WhatsApp and Messenger are considered social media apps? Are they not simply text messaging platforms? By that definition where does iMessage rank?

Fun fact: 6 of them are primarily used only in one country, while the rest are all banned in that country.

I have been low-key hoping that Social Media looks to the past for inspiration. Custom backgrounds, color changes, personalized music. What’s old would be new again lol

Twitter is so far, why pay 44B$ for this ? I don’t think any sane billionaire would….

Twitter has always been surprisingly small.

I think it is just not nearly as popular outside of the English speaking world.

Or maybe people just mostly see tweets shared on other social media rather than using twitter directly so it's impact is bigger than what its active user numbers imply.

There’s six ahead of reddit that I’ve never even heard of. God this place IS trash. If the moderators weren’t so hell bent on eliminating opinions they disagree with, business might be better around here 🤔

True. For years people have been saying Facebook is dying. I remember having an argument with a colleague who was very convinced that Google+ would wipe out Facebook. Facebook is a force in many countries, it is a lifeline for small one-person businesses. I outgrew my Facebook days, but I like to think it's the only social media that's actually "social" (own opinion). People are free to post whatever they want, and they don't have to be an 'expert' in this or that, they are there to have fun. The other sm just brings the same stress people are trying to escape, LinkedIn is an extension of work - people have to pretend to be professional, Twitter users think they are more "classy" than anyone else and Instagram and Tiktok - I don't know even what to say about those.
