It's been extremely common for at least the last 20 years. Look at the 2016 election, Hillary's campaign and PACs outspent Trump's 2 to 1. Obama's campaign outspent Romney's in 2008 3 to 1.

Typically the Dems out spend the GOP in every cycle also the Dems are wealthier, the idea of the rich Republican is old.

The right doesn't need to do as much advertising. They just tweet something outrageous and the media gleefully does their job for them.
Trump got $2b worth of free advertising from the media in 2016 alone.
