Moving to Boston from out of state and planning to transfer out-of-state license/registration/title to MA. I have my documents ready to present and a form or two pre-filled online for an easy transfer..

With that being said, unfortunately, my original title was stolen after a recent theft incident. Would the RMV accept a copy of it? I have both a picture of it as well as a scanned copy. I also have my physical registration (but I understand that the title is required) to show proof of ownership.

I know my alternative is to wait a bit and request a duplicate title from my previous state but wanted to hear if anyone else has experienced something similar. Thanks!

Edit: Just for clarification, the car is fully paid off and I have the full MA insurance and everything.

I did not have this specific issue, but they were very very specific about the documents when I registered my car from another state.

I probably would just try and request a new title, only because getting an appointment or waiting in line would a huge waste of time for them to just turn you down. I ended up having to go three times in person, and I was not thrilled by the end of it.

Makes sense. I already have an appointment scheduled for later in December to accommodate the time needed to get a duplicate title, but was hoping to get all that stuff done and out of the way as soon as possible if there was flexibility. Thanks for sharing!

I moved here from out of state last year. Just go ahead and get the duplicate. Trust me, don't take any chances. Also when you get the form from your car insurance company make sure all the correct fields are filled out. Mine didn't and it turned into a nightmare since I was on my lunch break.

I just transferred an out of state title and registration to Massachusetts. Boy, oh boy, are they specific. You need the original title for sure. They take that and issue a new one. They will also take the old registration. If you purchased your car < 6 months, make sure you have proof of sales tax payment in the form of it being checked on the registration. They wouldn’t accept the original bill of sale stating that. Luckily I had to go in once and it was quick. FYI I went to RMV in Wilmington. Super smooth. No appointment needed.

You MUST have an ORIGINAL title if you own the car outright. Also, you MUST have proof of insurance stamped on the RMV1 Form. Good Luck
