With Kindle you have to get Amazon books only. I have a bunch of unread Ebooks on my computer that I can't upload into Kindle. Annoying limitation.

Nah, you can use all kinds of books, depending on the format. You can email them to your Kindle or transfer via USB.

Calibre also transfers the books to your Kindle for you if you plug the Kindle to your computer.

This isn't true.
I've been reading ebooks for 20 years now; not all of them came from Amazon, but all of mine are on my kindle.
This article covers 3 methods to sideload books to your kindle.
