I wonder if the friend who tried to fight the bear had also gone passive if the bear would have just left them alone. Brown bears don't really eat people, and the guy who played passive just got a broken arm. Guy who tried to fight got absolutely mauled. Either way, I'm glad both are going to be just fine.

Black fight back, brown lie down, white goodnight. Black and polar bears will eat you, but black bears are often small enough to fight off. Polar bears are far too big. Brown bears won't eat you, just fight until they feel the threat is over.

Every, and I do mean every, black bear I've ever come across has run away with a bit of noise. I go on frequent hiking and camping trips in Northern Maine where they are very prevalent and have come across a good number.

Yes, sometimes if they are starving they will try to predate a human. 99/100 times they just run away
