Counties still exist in RI, but they just don’t do anything other than be a line on a map. MA is pretty much the same aside from a few counties.

They exist the same way an old stone wall runs parallel to the highway. They are no longer used as a political unit, nor do they truly demark boundaries. They are a relic; a historical residue.
