Shouldn't this connect to the Wickford Junction artery?? You know, so that it would have a function.

Was just reading about how there was an electric trolley line (built in the 1890s) that ran from Newport up to Fall River. They charged riders 5 cents per town (so, Newport to Portsmouth = 10 cents). I bet it was faster than RIPTA!
United_Perception299 OP t1_ja5f2qu wrote
And then a car company bought it and ripped it out, right?
Impossible-Heart-540 t1_ja7k7bi wrote
Revenues had dropped over 50% from their peak, and the street car lines were all losing money.
It’s comforting to place the blame on car companies who bought out the lines, but truthfully, it was us (or at least our grandparents).

I know at least parts of the old lines got turned into bike paths.

Now we need a regional statewide Network that brings you to places like Kingstown and Westerly.
succubusprime t1_ja54ymz wrote
Theyre trying to push a commuter rail from groton to new london to westerly. I would absolutely LOVE if it extended to Providence. As of now the only option between westerly and Providence is Amtrak and it isn't convenient at all.
United_Perception299 OP t1_ja594x8 wrote
That seems interesting, and at that point people in Connecticut would be using the commuter rail to commute to Providence, instead of just people using it to get to Boston.
kayakyakr t1_ja7xfz7 wrote
At this point, what we need is speed. We need to start separating grade and doing all the things we need to do to bring speeds into the 120-200mph range. That's what makes the full NYC-Boston commuter line feasible.
But getting commuter service to extend to Westerly would be a good start.
boulevardofdef t1_ja5fyjc wrote
This is cool but there's actually a proposed light-rail system that goes past TF Green and terminates at CCRI, so I think this should cover that base, at least. Would be nice to extend it even further to Main Street East Greenwich.

random-wander t1_ja5muik wrote
I would add a light rail network that maybe connects in kind of a triangle formation where one line goes down to westerly one line goes down to Newport via Bristol and then a connected for the two lines in north Kingstown. And maybe a line to Woonsocket

That finally makes sense… still, make it after the town, especially if it’s a name shared with a town. But otherwise yeah it’s cool

Bus route or the original trolley line?
United_Perception299 OP t1_ja5clmj wrote
One of these could be a trolley maybe. Anyway, the yellow is the xanthic line, a bus rapid transit service that connects to places where trains would be nice but too much out of the way. There's XL1 between the two Southern stations connecting to the commuter rail and there's XL2 to the hospital.
March_Latter t1_ja5fgnt wrote
From what I know the original Trolley routes there was one that went down town and one that went to the amusement park at reservoir....More History than todays commuting items so sorry to interrupt.
MonicaPVD t1_ja5oten wrote
At a cost of $150-200 million dollars per mile, on average, it's safe to say that RI does not have the density to justify building any kind of light rail for the foreseeable future. Shit, we can't even convince our leaders to underwrite free RIPTA, which would be like 35 million a year and literally change people's lives.
random-wander t1_ja9y7ti wrote
Of course the second densest state couldn’t support such a network just look at New Jersey and their lack of light rail…. Oh wait.
MonicaPVD t1_jaa3i3h wrote
There are nine times more people in NJ that there are in RI. If density were the deciding factor, Central Falls would have its own transit system by now.
PJfanRI t1_ja5q3qh wrote
Sadly the $150-$200 million has much more opportunity for grifting, so in RI it has a far greater chance than $35 million to help the public.
