SandyBouattick t1_jbyyojl wrote

I can't stand how bad things aren't caused by divine power, but good things always are. All the people pulling survivors out of the rubble of the earthquake in Turkey were praising God for each survivor, but nobody was asking why God allowed a million others to die horribly in terror.

Things do work out sometimes, and we need to try to keep our chins up and hope for and work toward better days. You don't need divine intervention to do those things.

For some people it's a coping mechanism, and I understand and respect that. But as usual… it's the instance that their way of dealing with things must be spread and be the 'normal'. The insistence on letting their way of life become yours. The evangelicalism.

Which is such a shame, because I've seen people who struggle really hard find their greatest strength in religion. But the taste is kind of soured for the rest of us.

The alternative, that everyone you love and work so hard to protect can just be extinguished, for all eternity, for absolutely no good reason, at any moment, is not really compatible with just going about your life. It's highly demotivating, at the least.

We can manage without God because we've built such a. Technologically advanced environment that we can generally expect for us and our children and loved ones to live to a heap to h old age.

SandyBouattick t1_jc01tav wrote

Eh. The US is still very religious. Try running for president as an atheist.

I completely understand how it can be a coping mechanism, but that only works if you believe it. If you stop to think why God would allow millions to die horribly while saving a select few, or why he allows suffering at all, or how he could be omnipotent while we also have free will, or which God is the real God, etc., then believing in it enough to actually draw any peace from that belief is pretty tough.

It makes me wonder if it's a bot. "divine right order" sounds like it could have been the output of a thesaurus-izing process to avoid automatic detection. (Or maybe a chain of automatic translations?)

Plus the two periods at the end, which is (for some reason) a hallmark of the Comment-stealing bots.

Plus the fact that OP is a 7-month old account who has been posting like it's their job and has 500k link karma.

Plus the fact that their oldest post is only 4 months old (not 7), indicating that the account may have been "aged" before use.

It's not proof, but I'm suspicious.

I'd tell them it isnt fucking fair or right what happened to any of them. And then let them say what they think because that is their right and saying life is fair is stupid.

It's ups and downs. Not everyone goes thru the same hardships and awful things in life but it's our job as fellow humans to respect stand up for and be there for the people that have been disrespected, hurt, and traumatized by life.

I am a survivor of sexual assault. You think life is fair?

I dont understand the hostility from this thread everyone is acting like im on a soap box and yet it just seems like you're drawing conclusions instead of trying to take the positive outlook away from what i said.

You know, I had a situation like this in the Army. I grew up as an Army brat, and we moved around quite a bit, including several deployments to Germany and Italy, the last one being Stuttgart where I graduated high school.

After I graduated and we were back in the US, I joined the Army and went to Basic in Ft. Jackson SC, and AIT in Ft. Gordon GA. At the end of AIT, we were all getting our permanent duty station assignments, and the vast majority of us were getting stationed to Berlin Brigade. At the time (1988), it was still walled in, East Germany still existed, and all that.

Many of these guys I went to basic and AIT with had never left their home town before, and were now being told that they were getting stationed to a walled-in city, that is completely surrounded by the Communist enemy halfway around the world. There were several guys CRYING like they were being deployed to front-line trenches in WWII. Me, being the worldly traveler that I was at 19 laughed and explained that despite what they THOUGHT, they were in for the time of their life, that Berlin was a VERY cool and modern city and that it was going to be, to paraphrase, "fucking incredible."

ScienceofSpock t1_jc0pf2k wrote

To close out the story, we were there during some "fucking incredible" times. I was there from 88 - 92, and we were, sort of this continuance of defense of the city of Berlin against the Russians, who held East Berlin and East Germany since WWII. As such, we were allowed to wear the Berlin Brigade patch as a combat patch, after our tour there was over. I didn't reenlist, so I never got to do that, but just a neat fact. Well, while we were stationed there, Gorbachov opened the wall and gave East Berlin and East Germany back, so the reason for our unit to exist pretty much vanished in the span of a few months.

A mission that had been ongoing since WWII was finally accomplished. About 50 of us got assigned to HHC Berlin Brigade to basically remove the entire brigade from the area and back to the US before it was retired completely and the units reallocated. We were there for all of it. Helped tear down Checkpoint Charlie. Got to see the Roger Waters The Wall concert. Watched several NFL teams play exhibition "American Bowl" games in the Berlin Olympic Stadium. Lots of cool stuff happened in a very short period of time, and I will never forget it.

I have a chunk of the wall on a plaque. It's a typical plaque like you might get at any trophy shop. It has an enameled map of the 4 "Sectors" of Berlin and a one and a half inch chunk of the wall as it's main features, and 2 brass text plates, one of which is crooked. It is one of my favorite things.

I agree with this method. Surprisingly I have written a list in the form of questions to remind myself how unhappy I’d be if I went back. So I recommend others in my current situation to give that a try as well to reinforce the change, because it will be very tempting to find those old comforts again.

Everyone loves a comeback story! Change is in our nature. We are the most adaptive species on the planet.

Don’t let someone’s admission that “I will never change” become an iron law in your mind of “people never change”. They change all the time!

Change is rarely comfortable though. So your fears are reasonable. Marines are fun but they aren’t exactly known for their people skills….

Im not playing semantics here, looking at all of this a week later i think this entire argument is too general to come to a definitive conclusion on. There is too much tragedy and too many people projecting said tragedy in any form as well as their outrage into the 'statement' instead of just taking away the positive outlook

Although i do like being questioned because i do think no statement should be made with its meaning so confused that the intent no longer holds its value
