Not necessarily. I worked for a dealership several years ago. Our dumbass lot boy left keys inside several vehicles over a holiday weekend. I only found out about it when a customer came in told me what car she wanted to test drive and said she already sat in it on Easter Sunday.

why didnt she drive it?!

I asked her that myself and she just shrugged. It was a 50k car too, Not many people would've resisted that urge.

I would resist ! If I saw keys in a car, i would assume its either sold and a customers car (aka: grand theft) or an employee is getting ready to drive or move it. Either way - driving off in a car without permission is not in the slightest but tempting. (Grand theft again). I guess I wouldn’t make a very good criminal though. God, i fucking hate thieves. More than just about any other crime.

In the 90s, I was looking at cars at a dealership in Manchester after hours with my dad and we found a set of keys on the ground. We put them in the service drop box.

Dumbass lot boy or not, if someone told me that, I'd rather they not purchase from me at all if they're going to just get in my / my employer's property without permission. Though I understand it's a tough thing to say that when you work on commission.

Wow that's a lot of cars! Has to be an inside job to be able to pull off such a big job.

Depends. That dealership does stock higher value used cars, so that could have been 12-15 depending.

12-15 is still a lot of cars to steal in a single morning.

It’s kind of impressive ngl

All used at that dealership, but high-end. They do a lot of sports cars, Rovers, Cadillac, etc.

I bought a Forrester from them about 3 years ago

They sell everything from low to high. But unlike most used dealerships, they have a lot of high-end.

Dang. I feel bad for the dealer and all, but it definitely sounds like an inside job.

It's actually not that hard if you get in the building and take a crowbar to the key box.

Pancrat t1_j9w75xa wrote

Not that hard to lock the keys to your million dollar inventory in a secured safe at the end of the day either.

MuchFunInNY t1_j9w2icq wrote

Checked their website. One car is listed at over $100k, so this may have been fewer than 10 cars. Insurance probably covers them, but what could someone do with such high priced cars? Such cars can go on cargo ships, but Manchester is far away from the shipping docks.

Better than stealing someone’s car that’s for sure, that’s happening a lot lately and very brazenly at that
